World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Madrid Preview: Records in Sight and Elite Fields at Gallur

Posted by: Watch Athletics

Madrid once again takes centre stage on the indoor circuit as the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Madrid brings together Olympic medallists, world champions and rising stars for one of the fastest and most anticipated stops of the season at the Gallur Municipal Indoor Arena on Friday, February 6. With national records under threat, a bold world record attempt in the men’s 1000 metres, and stacked international fields across the sprints, middle distances and field events, the Spanish capital is set for another electric night of high-quality performances on the Gallur track. Here’s a closer look at the key matchups and athletes to watch event by event.

Men’s 1000 metres

Spain’s Mohamed Attaoui will take aim at one of the most elusive marks in indoor athletics — the world indoor 1000m record of 2:14.20 set by Ayanleh Souleiman in Stockholm in 2016.

Attaoui hopes to join an exclusive list of athletes who have broken world records on the fast Gallur track, a venue that has previously witnessed historic performances from stars such as Yulimar Rojas and Grant Holloway.

A record would make Attaoui the first Spanish athlete to set an indoor world record since José Luis González’s 1500m mark in 1986. The Spaniard already owns the national outdoor 1000m record and the third-fastest performance in history with 2:12.25, just 0.31 shy of Noah Ngeny’s world outdoor record.

This season Attaoui won the 1500m in Antequera in 3:35.65 and clocked 1:44.98 for second place at the Millrose Games. A split near 1:47 through 800m will likely be required for a record assault, with Poland’s Filip Ostrowski set to pace.

He will face strong domestic rivals including Mariano García, world indoor 800m champion, and Adrián Ben, European indoor champion.

Women’s 800 metres

Swiss star Audrey Werro headlines a loaded two-lap field.

Werro arrives in outstanding form after winning the Diamond League Final in Zurich and setting a Swiss outdoor record of 1:55.91. She opened her indoor campaign with a national record 1:57.49 in Val-de-Reuil, moving into the world all-time indoor top ten.

Her challengers include European indoor medallists Anna Wielgosz and Anita Horvat, world indoor bronze medallist Noélie Yarigo, Olympic finalist Shafiqua Maloney, and Italy’s Eloisa Coiro in what promises to be one of the deepest races of the evening.

Women’s 1500 metres

Teenage Ethiopian sensation Birke Haylom leads an elite 1500m lineup against Nadia Battocletti and Spain’s Marta García.

Haylom owns the world U20 indoor record of 3:58.43 and has already won twice this season, including a 4:00.62 victory in Ostrava.

Battocletti, Olympic silver medallist and multiple European champion over longer distances, will chase the Italian indoor record. She has fond memories of Madrid after winning the 5000m at the European Team Championships last year.

García, the Spanish record holder over 5000m, adds further local interest alongside Portugal’s Patrícia Silva and Ethiopia’s Saron Berhe.

Men’s 60 metres hurdles

The sprint hurdles could deliver one of the fastest races of the meet.

Italy’s Lorenzo Simonelli takes on Spain’s Enrique Llopis and Asier Martínez, France’s Wilhem Belocian, and American Dylan Beard.

Simonelli is a European champion and world indoor silver medallist, while Llopis has repeatedly finished among the world’s top four on the global stage. Belocian and Beard both bring sub-7.50 credentials, ensuring a stacked and ultra-competitive field.

Women’s 400 metres

European indoor champion Lieke Klaver seeks back-to-back World Indoor Tour Gold victories after a world-leading 51.00 in Ostrava.

She faces Spain’s Paula Sevilla and national teammate Blanca Hervás, both proven relay medal contenders, on a track known for fast one-lap performances.

Men’s shot put

Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell leads the men’s shot put after throwing 21.77m in New York.

He will clash with USA’s Jordan Geist, who recently launched a world lead of 22.04m, and Mexico’s Uziel Muñoz, making for one of the strongest throws contests of the tour.

Men’s 60 metres

Oman’s Ali Al Balushi tops the entry list with a 6.52 seasonal best.

He lines up against American duo Marcellus Moore and Coby Hilton, Britain’s Eugene Amo-Dadzie, and Japan’s indoor record holder Shuhei Tada in a tightly matched field where hundredths could decide the podium.

Men’s 3000 metres

Ethiopia’s Getnet Wale, a Diamond League champion and global finalist, heads the 3000m lineup alongside Uruguay’s South American record holder Valentin Soca.

Women’s long jump

Portugal’s Agate De Sousa enters in top form after a season’s best of 6.84m and will look to extend her winning momentum against a competitive international field.
