The 2026 Mediterranean Games are underway in Taranto, Italy, bringing together more than 3,800 athletes from 26 nations for two weeks of competition across the Puglia region.

Officially known as the XX Mediterranean Games, Taranto 2026 opened on Friday, August 21, and will continue through Thursday, September 3. Approximately 33 sports and disciplines are represented, with 273 finals scheduled across 28 competition venues.

The Games return to Italy for the fourth time, following previous editions in Naples in 1963, Bari in 1997 and Pescara in 2009. This year’s event carries the motto “Embrace the Future,” while Ionios—a dolphin carrying the Mediterranean Games torch—serves as the official mascot.

Athletes from Europe, North Africa and Asia are competing in Taranto and other communities across Puglia. The participating nations are Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, North Macedonia, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia and Türkiye.

How to watch the Mediterranean Games

The 2026 Mediterranean Games are being streamed live and free through Eurovision Sport, which is providing international coverage, replays, highlights and athlete features throughout the competition. Viewers may need to create a free account to access the broadcasts.

Fourteen public-service broadcasters and partner networks are also showing the Games across 13 countries. The broadcast lineup includes RTSH in Albania, EPTV and Radio Algeria in Algeria, CYBC in Cyprus, OnSport in Egypt, Sport en France, ERT in Greece, RTK in Kosovo, RTCG in Montenegro, SNRT in Morocco, MRT in North Macedonia, RTP in Portugal, Télévision Tunisienne in Tunisia and TRT in Türkiye.

Live coverage of the athletics sessions will also be available free on Eurovision Sport from August 30 through September 3.

Wide-ranging sports program

Alongside athletics, the Taranto 2026 program includes swimming, water polo, football, volleyball, handball, boxing, fencing, cycling, rowing, canoeing, gymnastics, judo, karate, wrestling, weightlifting, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, sailing and triathlon.

The Games also feature newer and rapidly growing disciplines such as 3x3 basketball, padel, skateboarding and roller sports.

Competition began on August 22, the day after the opening ceremony at Taranto’s Stadio Erasmo Iacovone. Swimming, fencing, cycling, canoeing, badminton, taekwondo, boxing and several team sports were among the disciplines contested during the opening days.
