Silesia Diamond League Day 1: Tamberi, Jones and Jackson Triumph in Katowice Street Events

The 2026 Silesia Diamond League opened on Saturday with three street events staged in Katowice’s market square, where Gianmarco Tamberi, Alyssa Jones and Chase Jackson claimed victories.

Tamberi continues winning run

Fresh from securing his fourth European high jump title in Birmingham, Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi cleared 2.31m to win a dramatic men’s competition.

Tamberi and Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford both needed three attempts at 2.29m, but the Italian held the advantage on countback. Beckford then missed all three attempts at 2.31m before Tamberi cleared the height with his final try to seal victory.

With rain beginning to fall and the surface becoming slippery, Tamberi was unable to clear 2.35m. Beckford finished second at 2.29m, while JuVaughn Harrison and Poland’s Mateusz Kołodziejski shared third with 2.26m. It was Tamberi’s first Diamond League victory since the 2024 final in Brussels.

Jones snatches long jump victory with final attempt

American champion Alyssa Jones produced a dramatic sixth-round jump of 6.98m (+1.5m/s) to take the women’s long jump title.

Portugal’s Agate de Sousa had led from the second round after setting a meeting record of 6.98m (+1.0m/s). Jones matched that distance with the final jump of the competition and took victory through her superior second-best mark of 6.85m, compared with De Sousa’s 6.81m.

Monae’ Nichols completed the top three with a season-best-equalling 6.95m, while Jazmin Sawyers placed fourth at 6.84m. Malaika Mihambo struggled to find her rhythm and finished seventh with 6.60m.

Jones’ victory lifted her to seventh in the Diamond League standings, making her the first reserve for the Brussels final. De Sousa and Nichols both secured qualification.

Jackson launches huge meeting record

Two-time world champion Chase Jackson delivered the biggest performance of the opening day, winning the non-Diamond League women’s shot put with a meeting record and season best of 20.92m.

Jackson produced the winning throw in the second round. It was the second-longest mark in the world this year and improved her previous season best of 20.74m.

European champion and world leader Jessica Schilder finished second with 20.20m, while Canada’s Sarah Mitton took third with 19.34m.
