The race begins on Miller Street, North Sydney, with athletes surging over the Sydney Harbour Bridge before winding through Darling Harbour, Centennial Park, and finishing at the Sydney Opera House forecourt. With a net drop of 83 meters, challenging 313 meters of total elevation gain, and roaring support from more than 300,000 spectators, the marathon promises a vibrant and fast day on one of the world’s most scenic courses.
The men’s race will showcase marathon royalty. Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya, the two-time Olympic champion and world record holder (2:01:09), headlines the field as he chases victory on a new continent. He will face Ethiopia’s Birhanu Legese (2:02:48), Kenya’s rising star Vincent Ngetich (2:03:13), and Ethiopia’s Dawit Wolde (2:03:48).
Australia will be strongly represented with Brett Robinson (national record 2:07:31) and Olympian Liam Adams (2:08:39), both aiming to deliver big performances in front of a home crowd.
The women’s lineup is equally glittering. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands (2:13:44), already a multiple Olympic champion on the track and one of the most versatile runners in history, makes her Sydney debut. Kenya’s former world record holder Brigid Kosgei (2:14:04) will bring fierce competition, joined by a deep Ethiopian contingent: Workenesh Edesa (2:17:55), Ashete Bekere (2:17:58), Meseret Belete (2:18:21), and Tiruye Mesfin (2:18:35).
Australia’s leading women—Jessica Stenson, Lisa Weightman, and Leanne Pompeani—will look to challenge for top finishes while chasing fast times and national records.
