Yared Nuguse shattered the indoor mile world record, clocking an impressive 3:46.63 in the prestigious Wanamaker Mile on February 8, 2025 at the Millrose Games in New York City. This performance eclipsed the previous record of 3:47.01 set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha in 2019.
Nuguse, the Olympic 1500m bronze medalist, secured his third consecutive Wanamaker Mile title with this record-breaking run. Notably, the race was exceptionally competitive, as runner-up Hobbs Kessler also surpassed the former world record, finishing in 3:46.90.
This achievement marks a significant milestone for American middle-distance running. Nuguse is now the first American to hold an indoor or outdoor mile world record on the track since Mary Slaney in the 1980s. The last American man to achieve this feat was Dick Buerkle, who held the indoor mile record in 1978 and 1979.
In addition to Nuguse's accomplishment, the Millrose Games witnessed another world record. Grant Fisher broke the indoor 3000m world record, finishing in 7:22.91. Cole Hocker closely followed, also surpassing the previous record with a time of 7:23.14.
