In a historic performance at the Millrose Games in New York City on February 8, 2025, American distance runner Grant Fisher shattered the world indoor 3000 meters record, clocking an astonishing 7:22.91. This feat eclipsed the previous record of 7:23.81 set by Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma in 2023.

The race was a thrilling duel between Fisher and Olympic 1500 meters champion Cole Hocker. Both athletes were neck and neck throughout the event, passing the first 1000 meters in 2:29.08. Fisher then led through 2000 meters in 4:58.01. With three laps remaining, Hocker surged ahead, but Fisher remained close behind. In a dramatic final lap, Fisher unleashed a powerful kick off the last bend, overtaking Hocker to secure the victory and the world record. Hocker finished second in 7:23.14, also surpassing Girma's previous record.

This achievement adds to Fisher's impressive resume, which includes bronze medals in both the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters at the 2024 Paris Olympics. His performance at the Millrose Games not only sets a new global standard but also underscores the depth of American talent in middle-distance running.

Reflecting on his record-breaking run, Fisher expressed surprise at the pace, stating, "I didn’t think we would go that quick. I thought we might be able to challenge the American record and I thought I was in shape for that." He also acknowledged Hocker's role in pushing the tempo, noting, "I was surprised that he took it that early... I had to kind of reset for a second and just throw everything in the last 50."

The Millrose Games, renowned for showcasing elite track and field talent, witnessed multiple record-breaking performances this year. In addition to Fisher's 3000 meters world record, Yared Nuguse set a new indoor mile world record, highlighting a remarkable day for American distance running.
