Gout Gout Breaks World U20 Record as Hull Dominates 5000m at Australian Championships Finale

A historic sprint and a champion’s response lit up the final day of the 2026 Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney, as teenage prodigy Gout Gout delivered a record-shattering performance in the men’s 200m while Jessica Hull stamped her authority over the women’s distance ranks with a decisive 5000m victory.

Teen star Gout Gout stole the spotlight in Sydney, blazing to a sensational 19.67 (+1.7) in the men’s 200m to set a new Australian record and world Under 20 record. The performance saw him become the first Australian to dip under 20 seconds and move to 16th on the all-time list. Aidan Murphy followed with 19.88, also breaking the previous national mark in a stunning sprint final.

Sunday’s performance in Sydney moved him ahead of Usain Bolt, who clocked 19.93 as a 17-year-old in 2004—a mark that stood as the world junior record at the time. Bolt never improved on that time as a teenager before going on to rewrite the senior record books later in his career.

American sprinter Erriyon Knighton remains the fastest Under-20 performer in history with a 19.49 run in 2022, although the mark was not ratified as a world U20 record. Knighton’s official U20 record of 19.69, set in June 2022, stood until it was surpassed by Gout.
