Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu Wins Historic Gold in Thrilling Men’s Marathon Finish at Tokyo 2025

Tanzania’s Alphonce Felix Simbu captured a historic victory in the men’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, producing a dramatic late surge to edge Germany’s Amanal Petros in the closest finish in the event’s history. Simbu stopped the clock at 2:09:48, narrowly holding off Petros by just 0.03 seconds after an electrifying sprint finish inside Japan National Stadium. Italy’s Iliass Aouani claimed the bronze medal in 2:09:53.
The final meters delivered unforgettable drama as Simbu, Petros, and Aouani entered the stadium shoulder to shoulder after 42 grueling kilometers under hot and humid conditions. Simbu launched a perfectly timed kick on the track, overtaking Petros in the final strides to secure Tanzania’s first-ever world title in any athletics discipline. The finish margin was even tighter than the men’s 100 meters final held the previous night, underscoring the exceptional drama of the moment.
The race took place in sweltering morning heat (around 26–28°C, with high humidity), prompting organizers to move the start earlier to mitigate conditions. A large lead pack stayed intact for much of the race before the pace intensified in the closing stages. Ethiopian contenders Tadese Takele and Deresa Geleta, initially among the favorites, faded badly and did not finish, while Israel’s Haimro Alame and Uganda’s Abel Chelangat stayed close to the leaders before ultimately missing the podium in the stadium sprint.
