The 2025 Wanda Diamond League Final opened in spectacular fashion on Wednesday, August 27, as Sechseläutenplatz in the heart of Zürich staged a dramatic first day of competition. Nicola Olyslagers soared to an Australian record in the women’s high jump, Armand Duplantis claimed his fifth Diamond Trophy in the pole vault, and Jessica Schilder produced a decisive victory in the women’s shot put. With records, upsets, and emotional victories across six field events, the stage is set for an electrifying conclusion at Letzigrund Stadium.

Olyslagers soars to Oceanian record in women’s high jump

Two-time world indoor champion Nicola Olyslagers delivered a flawless series to win the women’s high jump on Day 1 of the Wanda Diamond League Final at Zürich’s Sechseläutenplatz. The Australian set an Oceanian record of 2.04m, clearing every bar from 1.91m to 2.04m on her first attempt.

World and Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchik cleared 2.02m on her second attempt to equal her world-leading mark but failed three times at 2.06m, missing out on a fourth Diamond Trophy. Morgan Lake broke her own British record with 2.00m to secure third on countback ahead of Yulia Levchenko.

Olyslagers: “Today I had peace inside my heart, and I knew something was going to change. I’ve been chasing 2.04m for years and finally achieved it, with the Diamond Trophy on top. What a day!”

Duplantis captures fifth Diamond Trophy in men’s pole vault

Armand “Mondo” Duplantis secured his fifth Diamond League title with a perfect series up to 6.00m, edging Emmanouil Karalis on countback. Both athletes attempted 6.10m without success.

Karalis, in brilliant form this summer, cleared 6.00m on his third attempt—his 11th time over the barrier this season—while Sam Kendricks claimed third with 5.80m.

Duplantis: “Karalis pushed me today. I love these street events; they bring our sport to life. This was my 118th clearance over 6 meters. I don’t take it for granted.”

Moon back on top in women’s pole vault

Double world champion Katie Moon won her second Diamond League crown in three years, clearing 4.82m on her first attempt. The American passed directly from 4.75m to 4.82m after an initial miss, then narrowly failed at 4.90m.

Sandi Morris cleared 4.75m but couldn’t match Moon, while Emily Grove equaled her PB of 4.75m for third. Home favorite Angelica Moser delighted Swiss fans with 4.65m before bowing out at 4.80m.

Ehammer thrills home crowd with long jump victory

Swiss star Simon Ehammer claimed his second career Diamond Trophy with an 8.32m leap in the third round, delighting the Zürich crowd two years after his first title.

Italy’s Mattia Furlani responded with 8.30m in round five for second, while Australia’s Liam Adcock jumped 8.24m in the final round to take third. Jamaicans Wayne Pinnock (8.15m) and Carey McLeod (8.07m) followed.

Ehammer: “Winning at home in Zürich in the Diamond League Final is huge. The flow and energy today were amazing. It feels like the circle is complete—I started here, and now I’ve won here.”

Kovacs dominates men’s shot put

Two-time world champion Joe Kovacs unleashed 22.46m on his fourth attempt to claim his fourth Diamond Trophy, just two centimeters shy of his season’s best.

Compatriot Payton Otterdahl placed second with 22.07m, while Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell (21.87m) edged Adrian Piperi (21.84m) for third. Former champions Tom Walsh (21.55m) and Leonardo Fabbri (21.47m) rounded out the top six.

Kovacs: “It’s awesome to win here against such a strong field. At this stage of my career, it humbles me that kids watch me on YouTube. I still have LA 2028 in mind—but family comes first.”

Schilder strikes in women’s shot put

Canada’s Sarah Mitton thought she had secured victory with a 20.67m effort in round two, but the throw was later ruled a foul. Instead, Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands—European indoor and outdoor champion—seized her first Diamond Trophy with 20.26m in the fourth round.

Two-time world champion Chase Jackson threw 20.08m for second, while Mitton salvaged third with 19.99m.

Day 1 at Sechseläutenplatz delivered drama, records, and emotion in a unique street athletics atmosphere. The action now shifts to Letzigrund Stadium on Thursday (28) for the climax of the 2025 Diamond League Final, where the remaining titles will be decided.
