The CMCM Luxembourg Indoor Meeting, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver event held on Sunday, January 19, witnessed a cascade of record-breaking performances across multiple disciplines, making it a thrilling start to the indoor athletics season.

Jakub Szymanski Shines in the 60m Hurdles

European indoor silver medallist Jakub Szymanski of Poland delivered a spectacular performance in the 60m hurdles, clocking a stunning 7.41 in the final to equal the second-fastest time on the European indoor all-time list. Szymanski’s journey to this record-breaking win was remarkable.

In the heats, Belgium’s Elie Bacari set the pace with a 7.51 meeting record. However, Szymanski responded emphatically, lowering the mark to 7.46 and equaling his own Polish record. In the final, he went a step further, storming to victory in 7.41, smashing his Polish record and firmly establishing himself as a top contender for gold at the 2025 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn. Bacari finished second in 7.55, followed by Szymanski’s teammate Damian Czykier in 7.60.

Canales Breaks Barriers in the 800m

Spain’s Elvin Josue Canales made waves in the men’s 800m, clocking 1:44.65 to break the Spanish indoor record and move to sixth on the European all-time list. Canales took control of the race with 300 meters remaining, building an unassailable lead and narrowly missing his lifetime best of 1:44.49. His time comfortably surpassed the previous Spanish indoor record of 1:45.12, set by reigning world outdoor champion Mariano Garcia.

Van der Weken Delights Home Crowd

Luxembourg’s own Patrizia van der Weken electrified the home audience with two national records. She clinched victory in the women’s 60m, clocking a world-leading 7.07 in the final after a 7.18 performance in the heats. Later, she set another national record in the 200m with 23.17, narrowly finishing second behind Germany’s Jessica-Bianca Wessolly, who triumphed with a meeting record of 22.84. Van der Weken’s performance underscores her potential as a medal hopeful at the European Championships.

Dominant Wins and Records in Middle-Distance Events

Italy’s Marta Zenoni delivered a commanding performance in the women’s 1500m, winning in 4:03.59 to break Gabriela Dorio’s 41-year-old national indoor record of 4:04.01. In the men’s races, Belgium’s Pieter Sisk and Germany’s Florian Bremm set meeting records in the 1500m and 3000m, clocking 3:36.71 and 7:39.01, respectively.

Field Events Add to Record Haul

The excitement extended beyond the track as athletes excelled in the field events. European champion Angelica Moser cleared 4.65m in the pole vault to set a meeting record, while Bulgarian long jumper Plamena Mitkova soared to 6.55m to secure her place in the record books.
