Patrick Mosin and Miriam Chebet led a Kenyan sweep at the 2024 Principality Cardiff Half Marathon, marking a memorable day for Kenyan athletes in one of the UK's most popular road races. At just 24 years old, Mosin outpaced Vincent Mutai, the defending champion, showcasing his burgeoning talent on a global stage, while Chebet set a personal best to dominate the women's field.
The race began with Mosin and a group of Kenyan runners setting an aggressive pace from the start among the 27,500 participants. By the 10K mark, clocked at 28:18, the pack had already thinned, with Mosin leading. As they passed through the Cathays district, Mosin extended his lead, building a 20-second gap over his closest competitors, including Mutai, Cosmas Boi, and Marvin Kiptoo.
Despite a strong challenge from Mutai, who cut the lead in half around Roath Park, Mosin held on to secure his first Cardiff Half Marathon victory in a time of 1:00:01, only twelve seconds ahead of Mutai. Cosmas Boi rounded out the top three with a time of 1:00:17.
"This victory means a lot to me," Mosin reflected post-race. "The atmosphere was electrifying, and the fans' support was incredible. Although the conditions were challenging, I managed to come close to my personal best, which is a huge achievement."
In the women’s race, Miriam Chebet, a silver medalist at the Istanbul Half Marathon, demonstrated strategic mastery and physical prowess. After trailing behind Caroline Nyaga and debutant Grace Nawowuna at the halfway point, Chebet surged ahead in the final stages to secure the win in a record time of 1:06:42, improving her personal best by 34 seconds.
Chebet expressed her elation, saying, "The competition was fierce, and I had to push myself to the limits. The course was excellent, and the spectators’ encouragement made a significant difference."
The Cardiff Half Marathon, growing each year in participation and prestige, not only provides a platform for elite runners like Mosin and Chebet to showcase their talent but also inspires thousands of amateur runners who come to experience the vibrant atmosphere and challenging course. This year’s event, marked by personal bests and competitive spirit, has set a high standard for future races, celebrating both the joy of running and the spirit of international competition.
