USA Sets World U20 Record as First Champions Crowned in Eugene
The opening day of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene produced four gold medal events, highlighted by a world under-20 record from the United States in the mixed 4×400m relay, a Kenyan sweep of the men's 5000m, Uganda's victory in the women's 5000m, and a personal-best throw from Brazil's Alessandro Borges to claim the men's shot put title. The championships opened at Hayward Field on Wednesday with the first global medals of the five-day competition.
Mixed 4×400m Relay Final
The host nation United States thrilled the home crowd by winning gold in a World U20 Record of 3:15.31, lowering the previous global junior best.
Czechia earned silver in 3:18.16, setting a National U20 Record, while Australia claimed bronze in 3:18.45, also a National U20 Record.

Men's 5000m Final
Kenya dominated the men's distance final with a one-two finish led by Frankline Kibet, who captured the world U20 title in 13:28.27.
Compatriot Nehemiah Kipngeno followed for silver in 13:30.09, while Ethiopia's Damitew Kebede secured bronze with a personal best of 13:35.38.

Women's 5000m Final
Uganda celebrated its first gold medal of the championships as Charity Cherop won the women's 5000m in 15:03.88.
Ethiopia's Shito Gumi finished second in 15:07.91, while Kenya's Joyline Chepkemoi completed the podium with a personal best of 15:09.08.
