Charlton impress in hurdles as Australia sweeps 5000m golds at Commonwealth Games

Another outstanding evening of athletics unfolded at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday (July 30), with Devynne Charlton producing one of the fastest performances of the championships in the women's 100m hurdles, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi edging a thrilling men's shot put contest, and Australia celebrating a dominant one-two finish in the women's 5000m. Olympic champion Thea LaFond added another major title in the triple jump, while Jamaica's Samantha Hall claimed discus gold.

Charlton blazes to hurdles crown

The women's 100m hurdles provided the performance of the night as Devynne Charlton powered to victory in 12.33 seconds. Although aided by a +2.5 m/s tailwind, making the time ineligible for record purposes, the Bahamian looked in complete control from the gun to secure the Commonwealth title.

Jamaica's Megan Simmonds followed home for silver in 12.41, while Nigeria's former world record holder Tobi Amusan earned bronze in 12.60.

Australia dominates the women's 5000m

Australia enjoyed a memorable distance-running double as Rose Davies and Jessica Hull finished first and second in the women's 5000m.

Davies claimed the Commonwealth title in a season's best 14:44.53, narrowly holding off Hull, who also ran a season's best of 14:45.01. Scotland's Megan Keith thrilled the home crowd by taking bronze in 14:49.10, also her fastest performance of the season.

Enekwechi wins dramatic shot put battle

The men's shot put produced one of the closest finishes of the championships. Nigeria's Chukwuebuka Enekwechi prevailed with a best throw of 21.07m, holding off New Zealand star Tom Walsh, who finished just four centimetres behind with 21.03m.

England's Scott Lincoln was also within touching distance of gold, taking bronze with 20.99m in a remarkably tight contest that saw only eight centimetres separate the medalists.

LaFond adds another international title

Olympic champion Thea LaFond continued her remarkable run of success by capturing the women's triple jump crown with a winning leap of 14.60m.

Jamaica filled the remaining podium places, with Ackelia Smith taking silver after jumping 14.04m, while Shantae Foreman secured bronze with 13.96m.

Hall delivers discus gold for Jamaica

Jamaica collected another field-event gold thanks to Samantha Hall, who produced a winning throw of 61.66m in the women's discus.

Canada's Julia Tunks claimed silver with 60.67m, while India's Seema earned bronze after reaching 58.65m.
