USA Win Double Sprint Gold at World Athletics U20 Championships
The sprint stars took center stage on the second day of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, as the United States claimed a memorable 100m double through Tate Taylor and Mia Maxwell. Elsewhere, Finland's Enni Virjonen produced a world-leading heptathlon performance, France captured women's long jump gold, and Nigeria's Jessica Oji topped the shot put podium.
Taylor delivered one of the standout performances of the championships, storming to victory in the men's 100 metres final in a personal best 9.94 seconds, becoming the only athlete to dip under the 10-second barrier. The American upset pre-race favorite Gary Card of Jamaica, who entered the final with a lifetime best of 9.93. Card settled for silver in 10.05, while South Africa's Marko Ferreira completed the podium in 10.16.
The women's 100 metres final also lived up to expectations, with American Mia Maxwell edging Jamaica's Shanoya Mikalia Douglas by just three hundredths of a second. Douglas entered the final as the favorite after arriving in Eugene with the fastest personal best in the field (10.98), making her the only finalist to have broken the 11-second barrier. Maxwell, however, produced her best race when it mattered most, winning in 11.14, with Douglas taking silver in 11.17 and Italy's Kelly Ann Maevane Doualla Edimo earning bronze in 11.27. Adding to the United States' memorable evening, Mariah Maxwell, Mia's twin sister, finished fifth in 11.35, giving the Maxwell family two finalists in one of the championships' marquee events.
In the women's heptathlon, Finland's Enni Virjonen capped an outstanding two-day campaign with a world U20-leading 6,214 points to comfortably secure the gold medal. Estonia's Mia Mireia Uusorg earned silver with 5,961 points, while Switzerland's Anna Pfister celebrated a personal best 5,850 points for bronze.
France celebrated success in the women's long jump as Djelika Diarra produced a world U20-leading leap of 6.52m to take the title. Greece's Evelyn Mitropoulou finished second with 6.44m, while fellow French athlete Soudatou Niang claimed bronze after equalling her personal best of 6.34m.
Nigeria added another global junior title in the women's shot put thanks to Jessica Oji, whose winning mark of 18.08m proved enough for gold. Ecuador's Belsy Jenniffer Quiñonez threw 17.90m to secure silver and set a new national U20 record, while Germany's Emily Scherf rounded out the medals with a personal best 17.23m.
With sprint champions crowned and multi-event, jumping and throwing medals decided, the championships continue to build momentum at Hayward Field ahead of another packed schedule of finals in Eugene on Friday.
