New York City Marathon 2024: Elite Men's and Women's Fields Revealed

Posted by: Watch Athletics

The 2024 TCS New York City Marathon is set to captivate the global athletics community on November 3, with a stellar lineup that marries Olympic glory with marathon royalty. Headlining this year's World Athletics Platinum Label road race are none other than defending champions Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia and Hellen Obiri of Kenya, who are both coming off monumental performances in the recent Paris Olympics.

Tamirat Tola, last year's course record holder with a time of 2:04:58, further cemented his status as a marathon great by claiming gold in Paris with a new Olympic record of 2:06:26. His victory was even more remarkable considering his last-minute inclusion in the Ethiopian team. Tola, now focused on defending his New York title, shared, “The hilly course and crowds in Paris definitely prepared me well for the bridges and spectators in New York, where maybe I can go even faster this year.”

Joining him in the elite men’s field is two-time Olympic medalist Bashir Abdi from Belgium, along with former NYC Marathon champions from Kenya: Evans Chebet (2022), Albert Korir (2021), and Geoffrey Kamworor (2017, 2019). Each athlete brings a rich tapestry of achievements and ambitions to the race, promising a fiercely competitive event. Debutant Abel Kipchumba from Kenya, who recently clinched the NYC Half Marathon, is also one to watch.

On the women’s side, Hellen Obiri is looking to repeat her historic dual marathon victory from last year when she won both the Boston and New York marathons—a feat not achieved by a woman in 34 years. Obiri expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “There’s no place like New York, and I am so ready to defend my title.” Joining her are the formidable Sharon Lokedi, 2022 NYC Marathon winner, and Edna Kiplagat, the 2010 champion, both from Kenya, alongside other elite athletes like Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, who will be making her NYC Marathon debut.

Adding to the international allure, the field also includes American marathoners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who both placed in the top ten at the Paris Olympics, and Dakotah Lindwurm, the top American woman in the same event. Their performances underscore the growing prominence of American athletes on the world stage.

This year's marathon is particularly significant as Tola aims to join an elite club previously only occupied by Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir—winning both the Olympic marathon and the NYC Marathon in the same year. With the course's challenging profile, which closely mirrors that of Paris, Tola is optimistic about his chances to repeat his victory, aiming to make history once more.

The NYC Marathon continues to be a highlight on the global sports calendar, not just for its competitive field but also for its capacity to inspire and enthuse a global audience, with its scenic route through the five boroughs and a palpable community spirit that turns every mile into a celebration of human endurance and spirit.
