NEC Nijmegen’s remarkable first UEFA Champions League campaign continues on Wednesday, August 19, when the Dutch underdogs welcome seasoned European campaigners Bodø/Glimt to the Goffertstadion for the opening leg of their play-off tie. Dick Schreuder’s side eliminated Olympiacos 2-1 after extra time and are now two matches from reaching the league phase, while Glimt survived an extraordinary 11-goal contest with Union Saint-Gilloise, advancing 6-5 on aggregate through Andreas Helmersen’s late extra-time winner. The visitors arrive with considerably greater European experience and a potent attack, but NEC have already demonstrated their ability to overturn the odds at home. Kick-off in Nijmegen is scheduled for 9:00pm local time/CET and 3:00pm US Eastern Time.

NEC are appearing in the Champions League for the first time and competing in Europe for only the fifth time in club history—and the first since 2009. Their European place followed a surprise third-place finish in the 2025–26 Eredivisie.
The Nijmegen side began in the third qualifying round, holding Olympiacos to a goalless draw in Greece before winning the return leg 2-1 after extra time. Bryan Linssen equalised after Ayoub El Kaabi had put the Greek side ahead, and Emre Mor struck the decisive goal in extra time.
NEC lost their opening Eredivisie match against Telstar but recovered with a convincing 4-1 away victory over Willem II. Their scheduled weekend league fixture was postponed to give the club additional preparation time for the play-off.
Bodø/Glimt reached last season’s Champions League round of 16 following victories over Manchester City, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan. Kjetil Knutsen’s team began this year’s qualifying campaign against Union Saint-Gilloise, drawing the first leg 3-3 in Belgium before winning an eventful return match 3-2 after extra time.
Glimt are also in strong domestic form, having won six consecutive Eliteserien matches since the summer break.
NEC Nijmegen
NEC are expected to be without Koki Ogawa and Sami Ouaissa, while centre-backs Philippe Sandler and Perr Schuurs remain sidelined. Schuurs is still completing his rehabilitation from the serious knee injury suffered during his time with Torino.
Bram Nuytinck has also been managing an ankle problem and will require a late assessment. If the veteran defender is unavailable, Gabriel Brás could enter Dick Schreuder’s back three.
Summer signing Almugera Kabar has been registered for the tie and provides another option on the left, although Clément Bischoff is more likely to retain his wing-back role.
Dušan Tadić and captain Tjaronn Chery should operate behind Bryan Linssen. Emre Mor, whose extra-time goal eliminated Olympiacos, is another attacking option, while Kaj Sierhuis could return to the starting side if Schreuder prefers a conventional centre-forward.
Predicted NEC lineup (3-4-2-1): Crettaz; Storm, Nuytinck, Fonville; Pereira, Monteiro, Nejašmić, Bischoff; Chery, Tadić; Linssen.
Bodø/Glimt
Håkon Evjen is unavailable with a knee injury and is not expected to return until September. Ulrik Saltnes and August Mikkelsen are also injury concerns, while Daniel Bassi remains doubtful.
Jostein Gundersen was withdrawn during the second leg against Union Saint-Gilloise and must pass a late fitness test. Haitam Aleesami is the likely replacement if Gundersen is not cleared to start.
Club captain Patrick Berg will anchor the midfield, with Sondre Auklend and Sondre Brunstad Fet expected to play alongside him.
Andreas Helmersen is pushing to start at centre-forward after scoring the extra-time goal that took Glimt into the play-offs. Ole Didrik Blomberg and Jens Petter Hauge should provide the width, although Ola Brynhildsen is another strong option. Newly returned winger Joel Mvuka has been registered but may initially be used from the bench.
Predicted Bodø/Glimt lineup (4-3-3): Haikin; Sjøvold, Bjørtuft, Gundersen, Bjørkan; Auklend, Berg, Brunstad Fet; Blomberg, Helmersen, Hauge.
