Scottish champions Celtic welcome Austrian title-holders LASK to Celtic Park on Wednesday, August 19, for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off tie. Martin O’Neill’s side enter the contest in excellent scoring form, having followed a 10-1 aggregate qualifying victory over Basel with domestic wins against Dundee, Kilmarnock and Dundee United, but the Hoops must compensate for several important absences and the recent departure of Arne Engels. LASK should provide a stern test after opening their Austrian Bundesliga campaign with three consecutive victories, scoring nine goals, and Dietmar Kühbauer’s team arrive in Glasgow on a lengthy unbeaten run. Kick-off at Celtic Park is scheduled for 8:00pm local time (BST), 9:00pm CET and 3:00pm US Eastern Time.

Celtic have made an encouraging start to the new campaign. They defeated Basel 10-1 on aggregate in their opening European tie before winning their first two Scottish Premiership matches. Their latest outing produced a 4-0 League Cup victory away to Dundee United, with Auston Trusty, Camilo Durán, Sebastian Tounekti and Benjamin Nygren scoring.
LASK arrive with even stronger momentum. The Austrian champions have won their opening three Bundesliga fixtures, defeating GAK 3-0, Austria Vienna 2-0 and SV Ried 4-1. They are unbeaten in 12 matches across all competitions and have won their last eight.
Celtic
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is unavailable through suspension, carried over from his red card for Beşiktaş against Lugano in the 2023–24 UEFA Conference League.
Alistair Johnston remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving Colby Donovan in line to continue at right-back. Jota is still recovering from his long-term knee injury, while Yang Hyun-jun faces a late fitness check after dealing with a minor problem.
Celtic must also adjust following Arne Engels’ transfer to West Ham. Summer signing Mika Baur, who made his debut from the bench against Dundee United, is a strong candidate to partner captain Callum McGregor in midfield. Viljami Sinisalo is expected to continue in goal.
Predicted Celtic lineup (4-2-3-1): Sinisalo; Donovan, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Tierney; McGregor, Baur; Durán, Nygren, Yang; Høgh.
LASK
LASK have fitness concerns surrounding captain Sascha Horvath and wing-back Kasper Jørgensen, both of whom were forced off during the 4-1 victory over SV Ried. Striker Samuel Adeniran was also withdrawn in that match but is expected to have a better chance of starting.
Ramiz Harakate remains a long-term absentee. Should Horvath fail to recover, Alessandro Schöpf could operate behind Adeniran and Moses Usor. The latter is one of LASK’s main attacking threats after scoring 12 league goals last season and finding the net in each of his last two appearances.
Predicted LASK lineup (3-4-1-2): Jungwirth; Andrade, Mbuyamba, Smakaj; Jørgensen, Ljubičić, Bogarde, Bello; Schöpf; Adeniran, Usor.
