Pafos FC will attempt another European comeback when they host Red Bull Salzburg in the second leg of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying-round tie on Thursday, August 13. Salzburg carry a slender 1-0 aggregate advantage to Cyprus after substitute Haris Tabaković scored an 88th-minute winner in Austria, but Pafos have already overturned a two-goal deficit against Hajduk Split during this qualifying campaign. The match kicks off at 7:00 p.m. Central European time (CEST), 8:00 p.m. local time in Cyprus and 1:00 p.m. US Eastern time (EDT) at the Alphamega Stadium in Limassol. Pafos are staging the fixture there because their regular Stelios Kyriakides Stadium does not meet UEFA requirements.

Match background

Pafos reached the third qualifying round by producing a remarkable turnaround against Hajduk Split. After losing the away leg 2-0, Ricardo Sá Pinto’s side recorded a 4-0 extra-time victory in Cyprus to advance 4-2 on aggregate.

The Cypriot club can also draw encouragement from its recent European home record, having won eight and lost only one of its last 12 European matches staged in Cyprus. That sole defeat came against Bayern Munich in last season’s Champions League.

Salzburg, meanwhile, remain unbeaten across their opening four competitive fixtures under new head coach Danny Röhl. Following their first-leg victory, the Austrian side drew 1-1 away to Wolfsberger in the Bundesliga, with Yorbe Vertessen scoring a late equaliser. However, Salzburg’s recent continental away record offers Pafos some hope: the Red Bulls have lost eight of their last 10 European games on the road. Sports Mole

The winner of the tie is expected to face Swedish club Mjällby in the Europa League playoff round. The defeated team will transfer to the Conference League playoffs.

Team news

Pafos are expected to be without midfielder Domingos Quina, who was forced off before half-time in the first leg. His replacement, Ken Sema, is suspended after receiving two yellow cards and being sent off in stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Charalambos Kyriakidis and forward Jajá are also unavailable because of injuries. Azerbaijan international Nariman Akhundzade, listed in some projected teams as N. Mammadov, could consequently be introduced in the front three.

Salzburg forward Enrique Aguilar will miss the match after suffering an arm injury in the first leg. Anrie Chase, Justin Omoregie and Stefan Lainer have also been listed among the visitors’ absentees.

Soumaïla Diabaté, Edmund Baidoo and Gaoussou Diakité are considered doubtful and will require late fitness assessments. Tabaković is in contention to start after scoring the first-leg winner and subsequently making his first Salzburg start against Wolfsberger.
