Course Map: Cardiff Cross Challenge
The Cardiff Cross Challenge course at Llandaff Fields is one of the most iconic and well-loved layouts on the British cross country circuit. It combines scenic beauty, fast grass sections, and classic mud challenges that define early-season racing.

Course Overview
The race unfolds in Llandaff Fields, a large parkland area just north of Cardiff’s city centre, bordered by the River Taff. The terrain is mostly flat to gently undulating, making it a fast and rhythm-based course, though sections can become soft or muddy depending on rainfall.
Surface and Conditions
The footing is primarily grass, with some transitions through packed dirt paths and occasional muddy zones.
Rain in the days leading up to the race often adds a technical element, especially through tight corners and low-lying areas near the river.
Athletes typically opt for 3–6 mm spikes, depending on the weather.
Course Layout
The start and finish area are located on the central open fields, offering great visibility for spectators.
The route features wide sweeping turns, short inclines and descents, and a few sharp bends that reward strong positioning early in the race.
Each loop (usually around 1.5–2 km depending on category) includes a mix of open stretches for rhythm running and technical patches requiring quick adjustments in stride and balance.
Spectator Experience
Llandaff Fields offers excellent viewing points, with spectators able to follow multiple parts of the race from one spot. The atmosphere is energetic, blending club spirit, elite racing intensity, and family-friendly local support.
