The 2026 Diamond League season gets underway this Saturday in Keqiao, Shanghai, where Olympic champions, world record holders and reigning world champions will launch another year-long battle for athletics’ most prestigious one-day series. The opening meeting of the season has assembled one of the strongest line-ups ever seen in China, featuring global superstars such as Armand Duplantis, Faith Kipyegon, Karsten Warholm, Letsile Tebogo, Cordell Tinch and Jessica Schilder.

From world record attempts to Olympic rematches and Diamond Trophy defenses, the Keqiao meeting promises a spectacular start to the new campaign as athletes begin their quest for qualification to the 2026 Diamond League Final.

Men’s pole vault

Two-time Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis will open his outdoor season in China, where he has enjoyed enormous success in recent years. Duplantis won the previous two editions of the Keqiao meeting with 6.00m in 2024 and 6.11m in 2025, and famously cleared 6.24m in Xiamen for one of his 14 world records. Last season the Swedish superstar captured his fifth consecutive Diamond League title in Zurich before winning another world title in Tokyo with a world record of 6.30m.

Duplantis recently improved his own world record to 6.31m at the Mondo Classic in Uppsala and arrives unbeaten since Monaco 2023. He now targets a sixth straight Diamond League crown as he closes in on the all-time series record of seven titles shared by Renaud Lavillenie and Christian Taylor.

The Swedish star will renew his rivalry with Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis, who cleared a national record of 6.17m indoors earlier this year before winning another world indoor silver medal. Karalis has now surpassed six metres in at least 15 competitions and continues to establish himself as the clear world No. 2 behind Duplantis. The field also includes world champions Sam Kendricks and several other six-metre performers.

Women’s 5000 metres

Five-time Diamond League champion Faith Kipyegon will begin her 2026 campaign in the non-Diamond League women’s 5000m. The Kenyan legend returns to China after narrowly missing the world 1000m record in Xiamen last year with 2:29.21.

Kipyegon owns world records in the 1500m, mile and 5000m and has collected three Olympic gold medals and five world titles during a glittering career. She enters the season chasing a record sixth Diamond League title after another remarkable 2025 campaign highlighted by a 3:48.68 world record in Eugene.

Men’s 100 metres

Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo headlines a loaded men’s 100m featuring reigning Diamond League champion Christian Coleman, Olympic silver medallist Kenny Bednarek, former Diamond League champion Trayvon Bromell and South African star Akani Simbine.

Tebogo arrives in top form after helping Botswana to a stunning 2:54.47 victory in the 4x400m relay at the World Relays in Gaborone, the second-fastest time in history. The Botswanan star won Olympic gold in Paris 2024 with an African record of 19.46 and continues to establish himself among the sport’s biggest global stars.

Coleman enters the season as defending Diamond League champion after winning the 2025 final in Zurich in 9.97, while Simbine extends an extraordinary streak of 12 consecutive years under 10 seconds in the 100m. Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala and Australian rising star Lachlan Kennedy complete a world-class field.

Women’s 100m hurdles

The women’s 100m hurdles will showcase one of the deepest fields of the meeting, bringing together the past four global outdoor champions: Olympic champion Masai Russell, world champion Ditaji Kambundji, former world record holder Tobi Amusan and two-time world champion Danielle Williams.

Russell returns to China after a breakthrough 2025 season that included a Diamond League record of 12.19 in Chorzow, while Kambundji arrives as reigning world champion after her Swiss record 12.24 in Tokyo. Three-time world indoor champion Devynne Charlton and Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent add even more firepower to a race featuring six women with personal bests of 12.24 or faster.

Men’s 110m hurdles

World and Diamond League champion Cordell Tinch returns to Keqiao one year after storming to a meeting record and world lead of 12.87, which elevated him to fourth on the all-time list. Tinch went on to dominate the 2025 Diamond League campaign with victories in Chorzow, Lausanne and Zurich before capturing world gold in Tokyo.

Japan’s Rachid Muratake enters in excellent form after clocking a world-leading 13.05 in Osaka, while Jamaica’s Orlando Bennett, Spain’s Enrique Llopis and Switzerland’s Jason Joseph strengthen the field.

Men’s 300m hurdles

Reigning Diamond League champion Karsten Warholm will make his long-awaited return in the men’s 300m hurdles after setting two world records over the distance last season. Warholm improved the world best to 32.67 in Oslo and later clocked 46.28 in the 400m hurdles in Chorzow, the third-fastest performance in history.

The Norwegian superstar faces a fascinating clash with Brazil’s Alison dos Santos, the 2022 world champion and two-time Olympic bronze medallist, who will race in China for the first time in his career.

Men’s and women’s long jump

Italy’s Mattia Furlani headlines a star-studded men’s long jump after winning world indoor silver in Torun with 8.39m. Furlani enjoyed a sensational 2025 season highlighted by world outdoor gold in Tokyo and Olympic bronze in Paris. Despite 11 Diamond League appearances, the Italian prodigy still seeks his first Diamond League victory.

The women’s long jump will feature reigning Diamond League champion Larissa Iapichino, who targets a third straight Diamond Trophy after a superb indoor season that included European gold and world indoor silver. American Lex Brown enters with the world-leading 7.07m from Gainesville earlier this year.

Women’s 200 metres

The women’s 200m brings together an elite sprint cast led by two-time world champion Shericka Jackson, 2025 world silver medallist Amy Hunt and 2023 world 100m champion Sha'Carri Richardson.

Also returning is two-time Olympic 400m champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo, who makes her first Diamond League appearance in three years after becoming a mother in 2023.

Women’s 400 metres

Defending Diamond League champion Salwa Eid Naser begins her title defense in Keqiao after reclaiming the Diamond Trophy in Zurich with a meeting record of 48.70. The Bahraini star owns an Asian record of 48.14 and remains one of the fastest women in history. Jamaica’s Nickisha Pryce and Barbados’ Sada Williams are among her top challengers.

Women’s 1500 metres and steeplechase

Olympic silver medallist Jessica Hull headlines the women’s 1500m after another outstanding year that included global medals indoors and outdoors. Hull will face world silver medallist Dorcus Ewoi and Ethiopian teenage sensation Birke Haylom.

The women’s steeplechase features world champion Faith Cherotich, Olympic champion Peruth Chemutai and former world champion Norah Jeruto in another loaded global showdown.

Throws events

The men’s discus will feature reigning world champion Daniel Ståhl against Olympic champion Roje Stona, world champion Kristjan Čeh and Australian star Matthew Denny. Four athletes in the field have already surpassed 74 metres.

In the women’s shot put, reigning world and Diamond League champion Jessica Schilder will clash with two-time world champion Chase Jackson in one of the highest-quality fields of the season.

Distance events

The men’s 800m includes Kenya’s Wycliffe Kinyamal, Australia’s Peter Bol and Britain’s Ben Pattison, while Sweden’s Andreas Almgren headlines the men’s 3000m after his European record-breaking 2025 season.
