Paris Marathon 2026: Deep Elite Fields Set for High-Quality Showdown

Posted by: Watch Athletics

The 2026 Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris, set for Sunday, April 12, promises one of the deepest and most competitive elite fields in the race’s history, with nearly 60,000 runners expected to take to the streets of the French capital. From the iconic start on the Champs-Élysées to the finish along Avenue Foch, the 49th edition combines mass participation with world-class quality, headlined by a men’s field featuring no fewer than 20 athletes with personal bests under 2:10.

Men’s Race: Sub-2:05 Talent Leads Stacked Field

The men’s race is set up for a classic East African showdown, with Ethiopian and Kenyan stars once again leading the charge. Ethiopia’s Kinde Atanaw, boasting a 2:03:51 personal best, enters as one of the fastest men in the field, while compatriot Leul Gebresilase (2:04:02) brings proven championship pedigree, including a World Championship bronze and runner-up finish in London.

Uganda’s world champion Victor Kiplangat adds further intrigue, alongside Kenya’s Sila Kiptoo, who returns after finishing third in Paris last year and will look to build on his course experience. Other key contenders include Hillary Kipkoech (2:04:45), Awet Nftalem Kibrab (2:04:24), and a host of consistent performers such as Samwel Mailu, Bayelign Teshager, and Rwanda’s John Hakizimana, ensuring a relentless pace from the front.

Eyes will also be on Djibouti’s Mohamed Ismaël, making his highly anticipated marathon debut after a 59:45 half marathon, and American champion Futsum Zienasellassie, who could capitalize on the fast conditions for a breakthrough performance.

European Challenge Led by Crippa

Europe’s hopes will largely rest on Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa, the reigning European half marathon champion, who arrives in top form after a national record 59:01 and will aim to improve on his 2:06:06 best. He is joined by a strong continental contingent including Matthias Kyburz, Zerei Kbrom Mezngi, and Sezgin Atac, all capable of pushing into the top positions.

The home challenge will be led by Félix Bour (2:06:41), fresh off a national cross-country title, alongside Emmanuel Roudolff-Levisse and Jason Pointeau, as French athletes look to deliver standout performances on home soil.

Women’s Race: Masai Heads Sub-2:20 Trio

The women’s race is equally compelling, with three athletes owning personal bests under 2:20. Kenya’s Magdalyne Masai leads the field with a 2:18:58 best and arrives as one of the clear favorites after consistent high-level performances in Frankfurt and Tokyo.

She will face strong opposition from compatriot Sharon Chelimo (2:19:33), the 2025 Barcelona winner, and Ethiopia’s experienced Yebrgual Melese, while additional depth comes from athletes such as Enatnesh Tirusew, Shure Demise, and Bahrain’s Desi Jisa Mokonin.

French and European Women Target Breakthrough Performances

Finland’s Alisa Vainio, fresh off a 2:20:39 victory in Seville, leads the European challenge, while France’s Olympic trio—Mekdes Woldu, Méline Rollin, and Mélody Julien—will aim to shine in front of a home crowd.
