Keely Hodgkinson delivered a sensational gun-to-tape performance to clock 1:56.33 in the 800m heats at the UK Indoor Championships in Birmingham on Saturday (14), rocketing to third on the world indoor all-time list.

Competing indoors for the first time in nearly three years, the reigning Olympic and European 800m champion dominated from the outset, splitting 27.36 for 200m and 56.28 at 400m. Already well clear, she passed 600m in 1:26.11 before powering home unchallenged in 1:56.33—achieved without pacemakers or wavelights.

“I know I am in really good shape at the moment. I’m grateful to run in front of a British crowd. It was a lot of fun,” said Hodgkinson. “I just wanted to practice that new 800m start and it was a good opportunity to do that. I guess I accidentally ran quite fast!”

Hodgkinson confirmed she will skip the Birmingham final and turn her focus to next Thursday’s meeting in Liévin, where Jolanda Čepelak’s long-standing world indoor record of 1:55.82, set at the 2002 European Indoor Championships, may be in danger.

“I feel like it’s my record to break. We’ll give it a good go.”

Elsewhere on Day One

Dina Asher-Smith lit up the opening day in Birmingham with a commanding 7.05 victory in the women’s 60m, finishing a tenth clear of Amy Hunt and setting a new championship record in the process.

In the men’s 60m, Jeremiah Azu, the reigning world and European indoor champion, successfully defended his UK crown in a season’s best 6.56.

Molly Caudery reclaimed the women’s pole vault title with a clearance of 4.65m, while Owen Heard secured the men’s crown at 5.55m.

Lucy Hadaway soared to 6.45m to win the women’s long jump, and Tito Odunaike triumphed in the men’s triple jump with 15.45m.

In the sprint hurdles, Abigail Pawlett clocked a personal best 8.05 to take the women’s 60m hurdles, while Daniel Goriola claimed the men’s title in a season’s best 7.78.

Madeline Down won the women’s para 60m in 8.24, and Kevin Santos took the men’s race in 6.93.

Reflecting on her performance, the 30-year-old Asher-Smith said she had been “feeling great for this entire indoor season,” adding: “Sometimes you just have to be patient, get race-sharp and wait for the times to come.”

The second day of the championships will be streamed live via YouTube, the European Athletics website and BBC. See full streaming details here.
