Sinclaire Johnson Breaks American Road Mile Record at Kalākaua Merrie Mile in Honolulu

HONOLULU — Sinclaire Johnson delivered a breakout performance on Saturday, December 13 dominating the 2025 Kalākaua Merrie Mile and setting a new American record in the women’s road mile. Johnson crossed the iconic Waikīkī finish line in 4:21.66, eclipsing the previous U.S. best and marking one of the fastest road mile times in history.

The annual Kalākaua Merrie Mile — held on Kalākaua Avenue the day before the JAL Honolulu Marathon — featured an elite field of Olympians and international medalists in a unique mixed-gender chase format, where women start with a timed head start ahead of the men. The overall winner is determined by who crosses the finish line first, regardless of gender.

Johnson, now 27, took control early alongside pacemaker Aurora Rynda before pulling away to a commanding lead. As the men’s pack tried to reel her in, none could match her pace. Not only did Johnson set a new American road mile record, she also established a new course record and posted the fastest women’s road mile ever on U.S. soil.

“It’s really special. I think I shocked myself today,” Johnson said after the race, reflecting on her belief in herself and her training. “To run 4:21 and get the American record is just a testament to how hard I work.”

Fellow American Nikki Hiltz finished second in the women’s road mile with a strong 4:24.81, also pushing the pace throughout the event. Behind them, a collection of top distance runners — including world champions and Olympians — rounded out a deep finish list in varying formats.

Johnson’s performance moves her up near the very top of all-time road mile lists. The world record in the women’s road mile, held by Diribe Welteji (4:20.98), remains just out of reach, but Johnson’s time is widely recognized as one of the fastest ever run under World Athletics certified conditions.

The Merrie Mile’s electric atmosphere and competitive depth — with elite athletes from around the world lining up in sunny Honolulu — made Johnson’s milestone moment feel even more significant. It caps a remarkable season for the U.S. middle-distance standout, who has continued to rise on both track and road.
