Paris, June 26, 2025 — Faith Kipyegon once again etched her name in the history books, clocking an astonishing 4:06.42 in a specially staged mile race in Paris aimed at breaking the elusive 4-minute barrier — a feat no woman has ever achieved.
While she fell just over six seconds short of the legendary mark, the Kenyan superstar smashed her previous world record of 4:07.64, set in Monaco in 2023, making Thursday night’s run one of the most breathtaking solo efforts in middle-distance history.
Dubbed the “Breaking 4” challenge, the event mirrored Eliud Kipchoge’s sub-2-hour marathon attempt, placing Kipyegon in ideal conditions:
With fans packed into the Stade Sébastien Charléty, the pace was brutal from the gun. Kipyegon hit:
But the final lap proved punishing. Despite the crowd’s roar and Kipyegon’s signature kick, she couldn't hold the sub-60 pace and closed with a final 400m of ~65 seconds, crossing in 4:06.42.
Though the time won’t be ratified as an official world record due to the mixed-gender pacemaking setup — a rule under World Athletics — the run will be remembered for its ambition and brilliance.
"I gave everything," Kipyegon said after the race. "It wasn’t easy, but maybe next time I can catch up with them [the lights].”
Her optimism hints at more attempts to come — with adjusted pacing, fresh strategy, and perhaps an even better-optimized setup.
Kipyegon’s latest achievement isn’t just a new world best — it’s a statement of intent. The women’s mile is no longer a static event. With athletes like Kipyegon pushing the envelope, what once seemed impossible may soon become reality.
As technology, training, and belief continue to evolve, the question is no longer if a woman will break 4:00 — but when.
