Warholm Smashes 300m Hurdles World Record as Stars Shine at Oslo Diamond League

A sold-out Bislett Stadium witnessed a night of spectacular athletics at the Oslo Diamond League on Thursday, June 12. The headline performance came from local hero Karsten Warholm, who thrilled the home crowd with a new world record in the men’s 300 metres hurdles. The meeting produced five world-leading marks, two meeting records, and a host of standout performances across the program. Among the highlights were victories by Faith Cherotich in the steeplechase, Armand Duplantis in the pole vault, Nico Young with a historic 5000m run, and Isaac Nader’s breakthrough mile win.

Men’s 300 Metres Hurdles:

Karsten Warholm, Olympic champion and 400m hurdles world record holder, electrified the crowd by setting a new world record of 32.67 in the 300 metres hurdles, improving his previous mark of 33.05 set in Xiamen in April. Warholm held off a strong challenge from Olympic champion Raj Benjamin, who clocked a personal best of 33.32 for second, with 2022 world champion Alison Dos Santos third in 33.38.

Warholm said: “The race went well, although I was worried when Raj closed on me. I knew I could push over the last hurdle. I’m happy to perform at my best in front of my supporters. The crowd was amazing.”

Men’s Pole Vault:

Olympic champion and world record holder Armand Duplantis delighted fans with a Bislett Games record of 6.15m. After clearing 6.03m on his third attempt to improve his own meeting record, Duplantis soared even higher on his second try at 6.15m, winning his third Diamond League event this season.

Duplantis said: “I’m very satisfied to get a stadium record. After previous visits with difficult conditions, it was great to finally get the right conditions tonight.”

Men’s 5000 Metres:

American 23-year-old Nico Young delivered a sensational victory in the men’s 5000m, winning his first Diamond League race in a personal best of 12:45.27 — the fastest ever US outdoor time over the distance.

Ethiopian teenager Biniam Mehary finished second in 12:45.93, followed by compatriot Kuma Girma in 12:46.41. British record holder George Mills (12:46.59) and a further six athletes also dipped under the 12:50 mark.

Men’s Dream Mile:

Portugal’s Isaac Nader claimed his first Diamond League win, surging to victory in a national record of 3:48.25. Australian Cameron Myers was second in 3:48.97, with Dutchman Stefan Nillesen third in a PB of 3:49.02. Several national records and PBs fell in a thrilling race.

Nader said: “I’m very happy. The goal was the national record, so job done. The Oslo track is beautiful, and the people here are amazing.”

Women’s 400 Metres:

US rising star Isabella Whittaker marked her Diamond League debut with an impressive win in 49.58. Norway’s Henriette Jaeger delighted the home crowd with a national record of 49.62 for second.

Whittaker said: “I was hoping for a fight like that. This is my first international meeting — I love it here.”

Men’s 800 Metres:

Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi claimed victory in 1:42.78. Mohamed Attaoui finished second in 1:42.90, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati third in 1:43.06.

Wanyonyi said: “I’m happy with my performance against a strong field. Oslo gave us a nice reception.”

Women’s 100 Metres:

Olympic champion Julien Alfred opened her Diamond League campaign with a win in 10.89. Marie-Josée Ta Lou finished second in 11.00, ahead of European champion Dina Asher-Smith (11.06).

Alfred said: “It was my first race of the season, a little rusty but a win is a win. It was an honor to meet Usain Bolt yesterday.”

Women’s 3000 Metres Steeplechase:

Faith Cherotich clocked a world lead and meeting record of 9:02.60, holding off Olympic champion Winfred Yavi.

Women’s 400 Metres Hurdles:

Olympic champion Dalilah Muhammad returned to winning ways with a season’s best of 53.34, ahead of Emma Zapletalova (54.44) and Gianna Woodruff (54.45).

Men’s 200 Metres:

Cuba’s Reynier Mena claimed his first Diamond League win in 20.20, edging European champion Timothé Mumenthaler (20.27) and Olympic champion André De Grasse (20.33).

Women’s Triple Jump:

Reigning Diamond League champion Leyanis Perez Hernandez dominated with a leap of 14.72m in the third round.

Men’s Triple Jump:

Jamaica’s Jordan Scott won with 17.34m, securing his second Diamond League win of the season.

Women’s Javelin Throw:

Olympic champion Haruka Kitaguchi captured her first Diamond League victory of the season with 64.63m.

Men’s Triathlon:

Olympic decathlon champion Markus Rooth triumphed with 2799 points over two days of competition.

Men’s Hammer Throw:

Olympic and world champion Ethan Katzberg claimed victory with 80.19m.

Women’s 10,000 Metres:

Ethiopian 18-year-old Yenawa Nbret set a world-leading 30:28.82, narrowly missing the U20 world record, in a race where numerous national and personal records fell.
