Double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet capped off an extraordinary year with a groundbreaking performance, running 13:54 to shatter the world 5km record at the Cursa dels Nassos, a World Athletics Label road race in Barcelona, on Tuesday, December 31.
Chebet’s remarkable time rewrote the history books, lowering her own 5km world record—set at the same event last year—by an astonishing 19 seconds. Her dominance was on full display as she finished 11th overall and 29 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, the second-place woman, who clocked a commendable 14:23.

Chebet’s record-breaking run is a monumental achievement for women’s athletics. Not only did she become the first woman to break the 14-minute barrier on any surface, but her time also surpassed the 5,000m world record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay on the track. This unprecedented feat highlights Chebet’s versatility and dominance across distances and surfaces.
The 24-year-old Kenyan star is no stranger to setting new benchmarks. Earlier in 2024, at the Prefontaine Classic in May, she broke Letesenbet Gidey’s 10,000m world record of 29:01.03, becoming the first woman to run sub-29 minutes with her jaw-dropping time of 28:54.
Chebet’s accolades this year also include defending her world cross-country title in Belgrade, Serbia, last March. Additionally, she made history at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she became only the third woman in history to win both the 5,000m and 10,000m events.
