In an impressive debut at the Cape Town Marathon, South African long-distance runner Glenrose Xaba shattered the national marathon record by over a minute, crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 22 seconds. This performance not only broke the course record but also set a new national record, earning her a substantial prize of half a million rand.
Xaba surpassed the previous national record of 2:24:03, set by Gerda Steyn at the Valencia Marathon in 2023, and also broke the Cape Town Marathon course record of 2:24:02, which was held by Meseret Meleka in 2022.
Mare Dibaba Hurssa from Ethiopia, the pre-race favorite, secured second place with a time of 2:22:36, while Kenya's Pascalia Chepngeno came in third, recording a time of 2:22:49.
This victory marked a stellar year for Xaba, who had won the Spar Women’s 10km Grand Prix series title just two weeks earlier—the first since 2018.
“I am very excited with my debut, at 33 I see I run more than how I used to run. I am happy that my pacemaker was there to encourage me. I would see people pass me during the race but I didn't worry because I know my strengths,” Xaba commented.
A low-flying plane paid tribute to Xaba, celebrating her outstanding year, which included winning eight 10km races and the national half-marathon title.
Xaba shared that she felt comfortable during the race, despite it being her first attempt at a distance longer than 21.1km. By the 33km mark, she felt confident of her victory.
“It was not bad, because I used to run sub 310, all the way in 10km - then in 21km I used to run. So we start with sub 25, the sub 30,” she added.
With the national 10km, half-marathon, and the Grand Prix titles secured, Xaba aims to maintain consistency next season to inspire young athletes.
“Now I have to focus, to be consistent in my running. So the young ones can stay motivated,” she stated.
Xaba acknowledged the crucial support from her family, sponsors, and coaches, Caster Semenya and Violet Semenya, who were there to witness her triumph.
