In a stunning display of athleticism at the TCS Sydney Marathon, Kenyan runner Brimin Misoi and Ethiopia’s Workenesh Edesa shattered course records, propelling themselves into the history books with remarkable finishes. The event, known for its scenic yet challenging route, saw over 25,000 participants taking to the streets of Sydney, starting early at North Sydney Oval, traversing the iconic Harbour Bridge, and culminating at the Sydney Opera House.
Misoi, in a brilliant strategic move, broke away from the pack around the 30km mark to finish the race in 2:06:17, the fastest marathon time ever recorded on Australian soil. This performance marked a significant improvement over the previous course record of 2:07:03 set by Moses Kibet two years prior. Misoi’s relentless pace in the latter stages of the race left his competitors trailing, with Chalu Deso Gelmisa finishing a distant second in 2:08:01.
On the women's side, Workenesh Edesa dominated with a time of 2:21:40, nearly three minutes faster than the former record held by Stella Barsosio at 2:24:33. From the onset, Edesa, alongside top contenders like Valary Jemeli Aiyabei and 2022 world champion Gotytom Gebreslase, maintained a course record pace. The decisive moment came post the half-way point when Edesa, paired with Ruti Aga, pushed ahead, eventually gaining a lead that she extended to finish 89 seconds ahead of Aga, who clocked 2:24:16. Gebreslase completed the podium, ensuring an Ethiopian sweep with her third-place finish in 2:24:16.
The marathon's conditions this year, marked by clear skies but tempered by brisk winds and a cool start, added an extra layer of challenge to the hilly course, yet it did not deter the record-breaking performances. Australian Paralympic champion Madison de Rozario also shone brightly, defending her title successfully amid a record turnout that highlighted the growing popularity and competitive spirit of the Sydney Marathon. This event not only celebrated elite performances but also embodied the spirit of thousands who came together to participate in one of Australia's premier running festivals.
