The New Balance 5th Avenue Mile in Manhattan is set to cap off the season in style, featuring 20 Paris Olympians racing down one of New York's most iconic streets this Sunday. This event, a highlight since 1981, showcases the sheer breadth of running talent, from beginners to elite competitors, across 60 races managed by New York Road Runners (NYRR).
Leading the men's elite field is Britain's Josh Kerr, the reigning champion and a standout athlete with an Olympic silver and a world championship title in the 1500 meters to his name. Last year, Kerr clocked an impressive 3:47.9, marking the third-fastest time in the race's history and the quickest since 1995. Alongside him will be seven Olympians including Germany's Robert Farken and the USA's Bryce Hoppel, promising a fierce competition.
On the women's side, Emma Coburn, U.S. Olympic medalist and world champion, returns to competition after recovering from an ankle injury. Despite missing the Olympic Trials and Paris Games, Coburn is eager to reclaim her presence in the elite running scene. Her participation is particularly symbolic, as she has been a beacon of perseverance and excellence in U.S. athletics, securing medals and multiple national titles in her career.
Coburn will be joined by a formidable lineup of international athletes, including Kenya’s Susan Ejore and Ireland’s Sarah Healey, ensuring the women's race is as thrilling as the men's.
The 5th Avenue Mile isn't just for the professional athletes; it also features age-group heats, a special NYPD and FDNY service members’ race, and a newly introduced heat for NYRR Unlock 26.2 x New Balance marathon trainees. These races underscore NYRR's commitment to promoting running as a transformative power for all.
This year’s event promises live coverage with expert commentary on WABC-TV for local viewers and ESPN+ for national audiences, making it accessible to a broad spectrum of running enthusiasts.
