Letsile Tebogo, who triumphed in the Olympic 200m final in Paris on August 8, continues his stellar run. The 21-year-old from Botswana has been on a winning spree, securing Diamond League 200m victories in Lausanne and Silesia last week. On Friday night (30), he added another feather to his cap by clinching the 100m in Rome in a near personal best time of 9.87 seconds, just a hair's breadth away from his PB he set at Paris Olympics.
Despite his recent dominance, Tebogo humbly regards Noah Lyles, who has concluded his 2024 season, as the current face of sprinting, not himself. However, his performances are speaking volumes as he confidently steps up in Lyles' absence. Engaging with the audience with his characteristic hand gestures both before and after his races, Tebogo's flair was most vivid during the competition.
From the starting blocks, Christian Coleman took an early lead, but Tebogo caught up in the latter half. Several meters before the finish line, after checking his position and finding himself alongside Coleman, Tebogo burst into a celebratory mode, reminiscent of his premature celebration at the 2022 World U20 100m final.
“This was one of my best 100 metres races. Today I had a good start and it made me think: “why did I not have one like this in the Olympic final’. Actually I did not plan to set a PB today. I remember how my body felt after the last time I ran 9.8. It was hard to come back from that to run the 200 metres the next day in Paris. I still have more races coming up and I did not want to get injured before Zurich”. Tebogo said.
