Keely Hodgkinson from Great Britain captured her first Olympic gold medal in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.72, three years after securing a bronze at the age of 19 in Tokyo, where she finished behind Athing Mu. Tsige Dugume set a new personal best of 1:57.15 to claim the silver medal. The reigning world champion, Mary Moraa from Kenya, earned the bronze with a time of 1:57.42.
Shafiqua Maloney from St. Vincent and the Grenadines finished fourth in 1:57.66, marking the highest ever Olympic finish for her country in any sport. French runner Renelle Lamote was fifth in 1:58.19, narrowly ahead of Worknesh Mesele by 0.09 seconds.
Hodgkinson led from the front during the initial lap, with Moraa closely tailing her. She maintained her lead through the back straight after the bell. Approaching the final bend, Hodgkinson increased her pace and pulled away on the home straight. Tsige Duguma surged past Moraa in the closing meters to secure silver, while Moraa managed to clinch bronze.
This victory makes Hodgkinson the first British athlete to win Olympic gold in the 800 meters since Kelly Holmes in 2004 at Athens.
Keely Hodgkinson expressed her emotions: "I have worked so hard over the past year, and crossing that finish line first meant so much to me. I feel I've grown significantly over the past few years, and this year, I've made a concerted effort to elevate my performance. I knew I had to surpass my previous best to win, and I did just that."
