Jasmine Camacho Quinn, reigning Olympic champion, claimed victory in the women's 100 meters hurdles at the Spitzen Leichtathletik meeting in Lucerne, setting a new meeting record with a time of 12.41 seconds. This World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting saw the previous record of 12.44 seconds, set by Olga Shishigina in 1995, surpassed.
Maribel Caicedo of Ecuador, who recently took second at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, secured the runner-up spot with a time of 12.64 seconds, ahead of European champion Cyrena Samba Mayela who finished in 12.85 seconds. "I surprised myself. I'm pleased with my start and will focus on refining my race in the weeks leading to the Paris Olympics," stated Camacho Quinn.
Cyrena Samba Mayela, competing for the first time since the European Championships in Rome and recovering from Covid, remarked, "I'm discussing with my team whether this will be my last race before the Olympics."
In the women's pole vault, U.S. Trials champion Emily Grove and Switzerland's European gold medalist Angelica Moser shared the top spot, each clearing 4.60 meters. Both attempted 4.70 meters without success. Gabriela Leon finished third at the same height. Moser commented on feeling tired post-Monaco, where she had raised her national record to 4.88 meters.
Zoe Hobbs of New Zealand won the women's 100 meters B race in 11.17 seconds, outpacing Serena Cole of Jamaica. In the A race, Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland edged out competitors with an 11.20-second finish against a -0.8 m/s headwind. Kambundji recently clocked 10.90 seconds, narrowly missing her national record.
Jessika Gbai of Ivory Coast topped the women's 200 meters with a time of 22.57 seconds, followed closely by Thomas Lanae Tava of Jamaica and Mujinga Kambundji. "The crowd's support was great, but I was low on energy by the end of the race," shared Kambundji.
In the men's events, 19-year-old Nigerian sprinter Ajayi Kayinsola won the 100 meters A race in a personal best of 10.00 seconds, leading a field that included Olympic finalist Ronnie Baker. Jereem Richards from Trinidad and Tobago won the 200 meters from lane eight in 20.19 seconds.
The men's shot put was dominated by Payton Otterdahl of the USA, who led with a first-attempt throw of 21.95 meters. In the long jump, Switzerland's Annik Kaelin triumphed with a fifth-round leap of 6.65 meters, narrowly beating Monae Nichols.
Dominic Lobalu set a meeting record in the men's 3000 meters with a time of 7:37.50, and Samuel Ogazi of Nigeria claimed the 400 meters in 45.17 seconds. Abbey Caldwell led the women's 800 meters in 1:59.36, and Anass Essayi also set a meeting record in the men's 1500 meters with 3:33.92 seconds.
Other noteworthy performances included Cassandra Tate's victory in the women's 400 meters hurdles and Rafael Henrique Pereira's win in the men's 110 meters hurdles. Maria Andrejczyk and Galis Cakss claimed the women's and men's javelin throws, respectively, while Daniel Haugh led the men's hammer throw.
