Australian Jessica Hull Sets New 2000m World Record at Monaco Diamond League

Posted by: Watch Athletics

Just five days after clocking the fifth-fastest 1500m in history (3:50.83) at the Paris Diamond League, Australia’s Jessica Hull delivered another historic performance—this time rewriting the world record in the 2000m at the Herculis EBS Wanda Diamond League in Monaco. Hull stormed to 5:19.70, slicing 1.84 seconds off the previous mark set by Francine Niyonsaba.

Hull’s record-breaking run was built on precise pacing. Spain’s Esther Guerrero guided the field through 1000m in 2:39.88 before handing over to Heather MacLean, who led until 1500m. From there, Hull took control, surging ahead and passing 1600m in 4:16.65 before powering home alone to stop the clock at 5:19.70.

Behind her, Great Britain’s Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished second in a national record 5:26.08, narrowly ahead of Kenya’s Edinah Jebitok, who also set a national record with 5:26.09. The United States’ Cory Ann McGee claimed fourth in 5:28.78, marking a new North American record.

With her recent surge in form—including an Australian record in the 1500m—Hull has firmly established herself as a leading medal contender for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics. No Australian woman has ever won an Olympic medal in the 1500m, but Hull now looks poised to challenge that history.
