The Jamaican National Track and Field Championships commenced on a high note on Thursday afternoon at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Kishane Thompson, mirroring his breakout performance from last year, electrified the crowd with a new personal best of 9.82 seconds (1.0 m/s), the quickest in the men’s 100m first round at this year's National Championships. Last year, Thompson burst onto the scene with a 9.91 seconds performance but withdrew before the semi-finals. This season, he matched the personal best of Oblique Seville from the Racers Grand Prix, which is the second-fastest globally this year, trailing only Ferdinand Omanyala's world-leading 9.79 seconds.
Defending champion Oblique Seville remained consistent, recording 9.98 seconds (0.4 m/s), while Ackeem Blake also finished under the 10-second mark with 9.95 seconds (1.0 m/s). Other notable performances included Julian Forte and Sandrey Davison both clocking 10.00 seconds, Rohan Watson and Bryan Levell running 10.07 seconds, and Sachin Dennis setting a personal best of 10.04 seconds.
In the women's 100m preliminaries, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson showcased their championship mettle with impressive sub-11-second finishes, signaling their preparedness for the season. Fraser-Pryce, the seasoned five-time World Champion, clocked a season's best of 10.98 seconds (0.7 m/s), while Jackson followed closely with 10.99 seconds (0.9 m/s).
Emerging talents also made their mark; Jodean Williams set a new personal record with 11.01 seconds, Tia Clayton recorded 11.02 seconds, and Shashalee Forbes posted a season's best of 11.03 seconds. Natasha Morrison and Krystal Morrison each completed the race in 11.12 seconds, and other qualifiers included two-time World Under-20 champion Tina Cayton, along with Kemba Nelson, Alana Reid, and Briana Williams.
