The Texas Tech track and field squad clinched their second ever national championship on Saturday during the NCAA Indoor Championships held in Boston. Propelled by stellar performances, including Terrance Jones' double victory in the 60m dash and 200m events, along with Caleb Dean's triumph in the 60m hurdles, the Red Raiders emerged victorious at The Track at New Balance in Boston. This win marks the second national championship for the men's track and field team and the third across all sports for Texas Tech. They amassed 50.5 points, surpassing the previous champions, Arkansas, who garnered 41 points, and Florida, who accumulated 39 points.
OTHER FINAL DAY HIGHLIGHTS:
Continuing the tale of athletic prowess, the NCAA Indoor Championships witnessed the dominance of two athletes securing double victories: Nico Young in the 5000m and 3000m events and Terrence Jones in the 60m and 200m dashes. Young, a collegiate record holder from Northern Arizona, dazzled in the 5000m with a closing 400m sprint of 54.39 seconds, finishing the race in 13:25.29. This left his closest competitor trailing by more than two seconds. He then clinched the 3000m title with a meet-record time of 7:41.01, becoming the first man to achieve this distance double since Abdihamid Nur in 2022.
Texas Tech's triumph was further bolstered by Jones, who contributed 20 crucial points. Jones matched his own Collegiate Record (CR) in the 60m with a time of 6.54 seconds, leading the Red Raiders to a commanding 1-3-6 finish, and shortly thereafter, he seized the 200m crown in 20.23 seconds.
MEN'S 200m VIDEO:
In the heptathlon, Texas's Leo Neugebauer soared to victory with a personal best of 6347 points, ascending to fourth on the all-time collegiate list. Heath Baldwin from Michigan State also set a personal record, amassing 6238 points for second place and becoming the sixth all-time in the collegiate rankings. Moreover, Houston's Grant Levesque achieved a collegiate best in the heptathlon pole vault, clearing an impressive 5.46m (17-11).
Adding to the remarkable performances, Georgia's Christopher Morales Williams, who had set a world record in the 400m just two weeks prior, captured victory at the championships with a time of 44.67 seconds. This time ranks as the fifth-best performance indoors by a collegiate athlete.
