Posted by: Watch Athletics

Sweden’s Andreas Almgren produced a remarkable marathon debut to win the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1, crossing the Central Park finish line in 2:06:01. Almgren finished 13 seconds ahead of Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa, while Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo completed the podium in 2:06:26.

Defending champion Benson Kipruto finished fourth in 2:06:27, just one second behind Mofolo, with Australia’s Haftu Strintzos taking fifth in 2:06:35. Only 34 seconds separated the first five finishers after a race that remained tightly contested deep into its closing stages.

American runners were prominent throughout the early and middle sections. Zouhair Talbi and Conner Mantz led through 10km in 30:52 before Mantz reached 15km first in 45:51. Almgren remained close to the front, staying within two seconds of the lead at both checkpoints.

Ryan Ford moved ahead at 20km in 1:00:51, with Almgren immediately behind him. Talbi then established a small advantage approaching halfway, passing the half-marathon mark in 1:04:01, three seconds clear of Almgren and the chasing group.

The leaders had regrouped by 25km, where Talbi, Ford, Almgren and two-time champion Geoffrey Kamworor were among the leading contenders. Kamworor passed 30km first in 1:30:26, closely followed by Almgren, as little more than a second separated the leading runners.

The race was still wide open at 35km. Mantz led in 1:45:33, followed by Talbi and Ahmed Muhumed, while Almgren sat fifth. Just 1.37 seconds covered the first 14 athletes, setting up a fiercely competitive final seven kilometres.

Over the next five kilometres, the leading group finally began to break apart. Almgren reached 40km in 2:00:00, with Kipruto just behind and Crippa also firmly in contention. Mofolo passed that checkpoint in fifth, 10 seconds off the lead, with Strintzos another seven seconds back.

Almgren proved strongest over the remaining 2.195km, securing victory on his first attempt at the distance. Crippa claimed second, while Mofolo moved through to third, edging Kipruto out of the podium places. Strintzos also finished strongly to complete the top five.
