Samuel Ogazi Runs Historic 43.38 NCAA Record at NCAA Championships

The third day of the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon delivered one of the greatest nights in collegiate history, with multiple NCAA records falling, world-class sprint performances, and Arkansas securing its first men's outdoor team title in more than two decades.
Samuel Ogazi Breaks Michael Norman's NCAA 400m Record
Alabama's Samuel Ogazi produced the performance of the meet, storming to victory in the men's 400 meters in an NCAA record 43.38 seconds. The Nigerian star shattered the previous collegiate record of 43.61 set by Michael Norman in 2018 and moved to fourth on the all-time world list.
Only Wayde van Niekerk (43.03), Michael Johnson (43.18), and Butch Reynolds (43.29) have ever run faster.
Ogazi's historic run continues an extraordinary stretch of form that has seen him clock 44.02, 43.95, 43.82, and now 43.38 over the past month, firmly establishing himself among the world's elite quarter-milers.
Jaiden Reid Sets NCAA Record in Men's 200m
Another long-standing collegiate record fell in the men's 200 meters as Jaiden Reid delivered a sensational 19.63 to win the national title.
Reid had already shown his form by producing the fastest semifinal time, but he elevated his performance even further in the final to break Walter Dix's NCAA record of 19.69. The performance places Reid among the fastest collegiate sprinters ever and capped a remarkable championship campaign.
Auburn Dominates the Sprints
Auburn enjoyed a historic evening with victories in both hurdle and sprint events.
World record holder Ja'Kobe Tharp captured the men's 110-meter hurdles title in 12.90, leading the fastest hurdle race in NCAA history. Texas' Kendrick Smallwood finished second in 12.95, with both athletes running faster than Grant Holloway's previous collegiate record entering the championships.
The Tigers added another title in the men's 100 meters as Kayinsola Ajayi powered to victory in 9.72 (+2.2 m/s). Although the wind reading was slightly above the legal limit, the performance ranks as the second-fastest all-conditions mark in collegiate history behind only Obadele Thompson's 9.69 from 1996.
Ajayi completed a remarkable short-sprint double after winning the NCAA indoor 60-meter title earlier this year and continued his impressive streak of sub-10-second performances.
Colin Sahlman Wins 800m as Arkansas Charges Toward Team Title
Colin Sahlman claimed the men's 800-meter crown, but Arkansas gained critical points through Tyrice Taylor and Rivaldo Marshall, who finished second and third respectively.
Those 14 points from the Razorbacks' middle-distance duo proved crucial in the team standings as Arkansas overcame an early setback after dropping the baton in the opening 4x100-meter relay.
Simeon Birnbaum Delivers Dominant 1500m Victory
Oregon's Simeon Birnbaum further enhanced his reputation as one of America's brightest distance talents with a commanding victory in the men's 1500 meters.
After sitting patiently near the back of the field for much of the race, the South Dakota native surged to the front with 200 meters remaining and pulled away from the field. Birnbaum crossed the line in 3:36.05, winning by 1.13 seconds—the largest margin of victory in an NCAA 1500-meter final since Clayton Murphy's triumph in 2016.
Habtom Samuel Completes Distance Double
New Mexico star Habtom Samuel completed one of the most impressive distance championship performances in recent NCAA history.
Two days after capturing the 10,000-meter title, Samuel unleashed a powerful finishing kick to win the men's 5,000 meters in 13:38.93, securing his second national title of the week and capping a remarkable season.
Geoffrey Kirwa Claims Steeplechase Crown
Louisville sophomore Geoffrey Kirwa climbed to the top of the NCAA podium in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase, winning in 8:17.46.
After finishing runner-up at last year's championships, Kirwa earned the first national title of his career and became only the sixth outdoor NCAA champion in Louisville program history.
Tennessee Shines in Relays
Tennessee opened the championships with a blazing 37.98 victory in the men's 4x100-meter relay, one of the fastest performances in collegiate history. The Volunteers added valuable points in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay to finish third in the team standings.
Arkansas Captures First Outdoor Title Since 2003
Arkansas secured the 2026 NCAA men's outdoor team championship with 56 points, claiming its first outdoor crown since 2003 and its 11th overall outdoor title.
The Razorbacks finished ahead of Georgia (49 points) and Tennessee (46 points), completing a remarkable season that also included the NCAA indoor championship.
Under first-year head coach Doug Case, Arkansas swept both the SEC and NCAA team titles while winning the national championship without claiming an individual event title. The Razorbacks relied on exceptional depth across the sprint, distance, jump, and relay events to secure one of the most memorable team victories in program history.
Arkansas scored in eight different disciplines, highlighted by runner-up finishes from Scottie Vines in the high jump and Juriad Hughes in the long jump, as well as a crucial 2-3 finish in the men's 800 meters by Tyrice Taylor and Rivaldo Marshall.
The 2026 NCAA Championships will be remembered as a meet where collegiate history was rewritten, led by Samuel Ogazi's record-breaking 400 meters, Jaiden Reid's stunning 200-meter performance, and a collection of sprint marks that rival the best ever produced on the world stage.
