World indoor champion and record holder Simon Ehammer of Switzerland claimed the men’s decathlon title at the 39th edition of the Multistars in Brescia, scoring 8361 points. His total marks the second-best performance in the world this year and the third-best in the history of this prestigious Italian combined events meeting. Sweden’s Lovisa Karlsson produced a breakthrough performance to take the heptathlon title with a personal best of 6190.
Ehammer dominated the two-day competition, winning five events: the 100m (10.81), long jump (wind-assisted 8.18m), 400m (47.20), 110m hurdles (meeting record 13.74), and pole vault (5.05m).
In the women’s heptathlon, Sweden’s Lovisa Karlsson secured victory with a personal best of 6190 points.
Men’s Decathlon
Ehammer set the tone early on day two by winning the 110m hurdles in a meeting record of 13.74 into a -0.8 m/s headwind, improving the previous mark held by José Fernando Ferreira. Ferreira finished second in 14.06, ahead of Colombia’s Julio Angulo (14.23).
After six events, Ehammer led comfortably with 5498 points, followed by Angulo (5248), Nino Portmann (5083), and Ferreira (4990).
Angulo responded in the discus, producing 46.80m — the second-best mark of his career — to narrow the gap to 132 points, while Ehammer threw 41.03m. Portmann’s 46.62m secured second in the event and kept him third overall.
Ehammer maintained control after seven events with 6184 points, ahead of Angulo (6052), Portmann (5883), and Ferreira (5715).
The Swiss star then extended his lead in the pole vault, clearing 5.05m on his first attempt. Nonino placed second with 4.95m, while Angulo managed 3.95m. Ehammer moved to 7110 points after eight events, well ahead of Angulo (6655) and Ferreira (6610).
Ferreira struck back in the javelin with a winning throw of 67.13m, surpassing David Abrines (63.55m) and Leon Krummenacher (63.07m). Ehammer threw 51.05m to remain in front with 7715 points. Ferreira climbed into second overall with 7456, while Angulo (56.25m) held third.
Ehammer sealed the title in the 1500m, clocking 4:45.51 to finish with 8361 points.
He also earned the Sandro Calvesi Award after scoring a combined 3018 points across the 100m, 110m hurdles, and long jump.
His training partner Andrin Huber crossed the line first in the 1500m (4:27.42), ahead of Italy’s Lorenzo Mellano (4:29.03) and Alberto Nonino (4:29.11).
Ferreira finished second overall with 8057 points, followed by Angulo (8005), who narrowly missed his personal best by four points. Portmann placed fourth with a PB of 7930, while Krummenacher (7838) and Nonino (7714) also achieved lifetime bests.
“It was a good start. I had a long and emotional indoor season. At the start of this week I was not sure I would be able to compete at the level I wanted. I enjoy competing in Brescia. It was nice to feel the pain of competing again in a decathlon. You cannot compare indoor competitions to a decathlon. I performed well in the 400 metres. This decathlon was important to test my shape in the javelin and discus throw events and in the 1500 metres, which are not part of indoor competitions. I hope to make a step forward in four weeks in Götzis and achieve a better score,” said Ehammer.
Women’s Heptathlon
Karlsson took control of the competition with a winning long jump of 6.47m, moving into the lead with 4627 points. Jessica Barreira followed with 6.00m (4515 points), while Paula de Boer (6.14m) and Vilma Italinna (6.02m) remained in contention.
Barreira regained the overall lead after winning the javelin with 49.14m, reaching 5358 points. Karlsson responded with a personal best of 41.35m — her first throw beyond 40 metres — to stay close at 5320 points. Mathilde Rey’s 46.27m lifted her into third.
In the 800m, Floortje Tromp clocked the fastest time (2:11.90), while Niamh Emerson won the second heat in 2:12.02. Karlsson ran 2:16.63, while Barreira posted a PB of 2:27.91.
Karlsson secured overall victory with 6190 points, improving her PB by 44 points and becoming the first Swedish heptathlete to win Multistars.
Barreira finished second with a PB of 6077 points, ahead of Rey (5876). Emerson placed fourth with 5799 in her first completed heptathlon since 2018, while Italinna took fifth with 5789.
“I am so happy, as I made my comeback from injury. I had a stress reaction in my foot. I performed well in the long jump, javelin throw and in the 800 metres. I finished fourth with 6051 points in 2024 when I competed in Brescia for the first time. I came back here this year with a PB of 6190 points,” said Karlsson.
Barreira also earned the Gabre Gabric Trophy after scoring 2549 points across the shot put, long jump, and javelin throw.
