The 14th edition of the Generali Málaga Marathon, held on Sunday (15), brought together 16,000 runners from across the globe for one of Spain's most prestigious road races. The event, which showcased impressive athleticism, concluded with dominant performances from Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes in both the men’s and women’s categories.
In the men’s race, Vincent Kipkorir of Kenya emerged victorious, clocking an impressive time of 2:08:05. Kipkorir's pace put him just 30 seconds shy of the course record set in 2021. His compatriot, Micah Kipkosgei, claimed second place with a time of 2:09:21, while Uganda’s Andrew Rotich Kwemoi secured the final podium spot with a finish of 2:10:20. The race highlighted the fierce competition among East African runners, with the top three athletes maintaining a blistering pace throughout.
The women’s race was equally thrilling, as Ethiopia’s Domina Aynalem Desta Gebre claimed victory in a time of 2:25:10, narrowly missing the women’s course record by just 20 seconds. Fellow Ethiopian, Adanech Mesfen Mekonnen, finished in second place at 2:26:01, followed closely by Gojjam Tsegaye Enyew, who completed the podium with a time of 2:26:13. The Ethiopian dominance in the women’s race was a testament to the nation's strength in long-distance running.
Spanish athletes also made their presence felt, with David Martín being the top Spanish finisher in the men’s race, securing 12th place with a time of 2:22:21. In the women’s category, Marta Bote finished 11th, clocking a time of 2:45:22.
The Málaga Marathon, renowned for its scenic coastal route and energetic crowds, continues to attract top international talent. This year’s event further solidified the marathon's reputation as a fast course that delivers remarkable performances. For Kipkorir and Desta Gebre, their victories not only highlight their exceptional endurance but also mark another milestone in their illustrious careers.
