Issam Asinga smashes World U20 record with 9.89 seconds at South American Championships

Issam Asinga from Suriname made history on Friday, July 28 at the 2023 South American Athletics Outdoor Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil. In an outstanding display of speed and skill, Asinga blazed through the men's 100m race, setting a new World U20 record with a breathtaking time of 9.89 seconds.

After cruising into the final with a time of 10.03 seconds earlier in the day, Asinga returned roughly 90 minutes later to take home the title. Asinga shattered the previous world U20 record of 9.91 seconds, set in 2022 by Letsile Tebogo.

This remarkable achievement is a testament to Asinga's dedication, hard work, and natural talent. The race showcased his incredible speed and agility, as he left his competitors in awe. Asinga's performance not only secured him the gold medal but also solidified his place in the annals of athletics history.

To finish second at the 2023 South American Athletics Outdoor Championships, Brazil’s Erik Cardoso clocked a personal best and national record of 9.97 seconds, and Columbian Ronal Mosquera finished third with a time of 9.99 seconds, also a personal best and national record.
