Tamirat Tola wins World Championships marathon gold

Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia won the men's marathon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday.

Tola broke away from the lead pack in the last 8km, clocking 28:22 between 30K and 40K,  and ran solo to win the 2022 World marathon gold in 2:05:37. His winning time smashed the previous record of 2:06:54  set by Kenyan Abel Kirui in 2009 in Berlin.

Mosinet Geremew of Ethiopia, like in the 2019 championships, won the silver medal at 2:06:45, while Olympic bronze medalist Basher Abdi of Belgium was third in 2:06:49. Canadian Cam Levins set a new national record by finishing four in 2:07:10.

USA's favorite Galen Rupp was the top American finisher, ranking 19th with a time of  2:09:37.
