Before the race Haroun's coach had to negotiate with meeting organizers to let the youngster run the 400m at XL Galan meet. The organizers did not permit Haroun to race since he had not recorded an official time. (His only mark that his coach presented to meeting organizers was 45.7 hand timing in a low key meet in Qatar from last year).
Finally Haroun was allowed to race in a B race with slower runners and the young Qatari did not let his coach down as he won the race with a massive PB of 45.39 setting a new Asian Indoor record. About an hour later world indoor champion Pavel Maslak of Czech Republic won the A race in 46.38 almost one second slower than Haroun ran previously.
