Kiprono Blazes 7:28.28 as DeLeon Leads USA 1-2 in 400m at World U20 Championships
Day three of the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships produced a series of outstanding performances at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday, August 7, highlighted by Emmanuel Kiprono's remarkable 7:28.28 championship record in the men's 3000m and a United States 1-2 finish in the men's 400m.
Seven titles were decided during the session, with champions crowned in the men's 3000m, men's and women's 400m, men's javelin, men's triple jump, men's hammer and women's 3000m steeplechase.
Kiprono Dominates Men's 3000m
Kenya's Emmanuel Kiprono delivered one of the standout performances of the championships, storming to the men's 3000m title in a sensational 7:28.28 championship record.
Kiprono was in a class of his own, finishing almost 20 seconds clear of France's Alois Abraham, who claimed silver in 7:47.79. Japan's Ojiro Honda completed the podium in 7:48.49, setting a national U20 record.

DeLeon Beats Wilson in USA 400m One-Two
The United States dominated the men's 400m final as Jayden DeLeon produced a huge 44.47 performance to take gold, beating compatriot Quincy Wilson.
Wilson, who had entered the final after clocking the fastest semifinal time of 45.02, stepped up significantly in the medal race but had to settle for silver in 44.62. South Africa's Leendert Koekemoer broke 45 seconds to secure bronze in 44.96.
DeLeon's victory made him the first American to win the men's 400m title at the World U20 Championships since 2008.

Kuś Takes Women's 400m Crown
Poland's Anastazja Kuś captured the women's 400m world U20 title in 51.06, producing her best performance when it mattered most.
Ataja Stephanie-Vazquez took silver in 51.36, while Tianna Springer secured bronze in 51.76. The three were separated by just seven tenths of a second in a competitive final.

Yohannis Leads Ethiopian Steeplechase One-Two
Ethiopia dominated the women's 3000m steeplechase as Almaz Yohannis claimed gold in 9:15.81.
Yohannis pulled clear to take the world U20 title ahead of compatriot Wosane Asefa, who finished second in 9:30.50. Kenya's Anatasha Cheptoo prevented an Ethiopian podium sweep by taking bronze in 9:37.18.

Heymans Launches 80.50m World U20 Lead
South Africa celebrated gold in the men's javelin as Jan-Hendrik Heymans launched the spear to a world U20-leading 80.50m.
Heymans was the only athlete in the final to surpass 80 metres and finished more than six metres ahead of India's Ashish Yadav, who took silver with 74.09m.
Dominica's Addison James earned bronze with 73.89m, setting a national U20 record.

Edwards Soars Beyond 17 Metres in Triple Jump
Jamaica's Michael-Andre Matthew Edwards produced a world U20-leading 17.08m (+1.1 m/s) to capture the men's triple jump title.
Edwards became the only athlete in the competition to surpass the 17-metre barrier. American Miles Nesmith produced a personal best of 16.79m for silver, while China's Zhuoyue Wang took bronze with 16.36m.

Chen Wins Men's Hammer Title
China's Jiawei Chen won the men's hammer throw title with 79.16m, holding off a strong American challenge.
Kayden Hulet claimed silver with 77.55m, while fellow American Wyatt Larkins secured bronze with 75.38m to give the United States two places on the podium.

Kiprono's extraordinary 7:28.28 in the men's 3000m ultimately provided the defining performance of an action-packed third day in Eugene, while DeLeon's victory over Wilson in a high-quality men's 400m final gave the home crowd another reason to celebrate.
