Dennis Kipkogei Smashes Mainz Half Marathon Course Record with 59:14 Masterclass

Dennis Kipkogei confirmed his status as one of Kenya’s brightest rising distance stars with a stunning course-record performance at the Gutenberg Mainz Half Marathon on Sunday. The 24-year-old clocked 59:14 to firmly place the German race on the international map for elite half marathon running. Among German half marathons, only Berlin currently produces faster times.

It was only Kipkogei’s second race outside Kenya after his runner-up finish at the Berlin Half Marathon in March, where he spent most of the race working as a pacemaker. Following that breakthrough run in the German capital, the young Kenyan proved in Mainz that his performance was no coincidence. Dennis Kipkogei now looks every bit a future star of global distance running. In Mainz he finished more than a minute clear of the field. Fellow Kenyans Kelvin Kipruto, making his debut, and Jamal Kiprono completed the podium in 60:25 and 60:29 respectively.

For the third consecutive year both course records fell in Mainz. Kenya’s Beatrice Cheserek claimed the women’s title in 68:02, while Germany’s Blanka Dörfel delivered an outstanding breakthrough performance to finish second in 68:06. The 24-year-old improved her personal best dramatically and became the sixth-fastest German woman ever over the half marathon distance. Ethiopia’s Emebet Kebede Dessie placed third in 69:01.

“We are very pleased that we were able to break both course records for the third time. A winning time of sub one hour is of course something special. With that result we are currently the eleventh-fastest half marathon in the world this year – that is quite an achievement,” said Race Director Jo Schindler. Organisers registered 12,960 entries for the half marathon, while more than 17,500 athletes competed across all race distances.

The men’s leading group opened at a blistering pace, with early split times projecting finishing marks well under 59 minutes. As expected, Dennis Kipkogei made his decisive move shortly after 10 kilometres and steadily increased his advantage. Only in the closing stages, under warm conditions of around 20 degrees Celsius, did the Kenyan slightly fade, narrowly missing his personal best of 59:11 from Berlin.

“I came here to break the course record and I am happy that I managed it. I had a problem with my hamstring so my body did not feel that good. Otherwise I could have run even faster,” said Dennis Kipkogei, who slashed the previous course record of 60:50 by more than one and a half minutes with his 59:14 performance. “If I am selected I will compete at the World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen in September.“

All three runners behind Kipkogei also finished inside the previous course record. Germany’s national marathon champion Tom Thurley was the top home athlete, finishing eleventh in 64:07, just eleven seconds outside his personal best.

“My next goal is an autumn marathon and I will try to improve to under 2:10,“ he said.

In the women’s race, Kenya’s Joan Chepleting initially broke away from the field during the early stages but paid for the aggressive pace and was reeled back in shortly before 10 kilometres. A thrilling duel then developed between pre-race favourite Beatrice Cheserek and the impressive Blanka Dörfel. In the closing kilometres Cheserek, who arrived in Mainz with the fastest personal best on the start list at 66:48, created a decisive gap to secure victory.

“I am delighted with this victory. My next goal is to run in the World Half Marathon Championships and after that I plan to run an autumn marathon,” said Beatrice Cheserek. Her winning time of 68:02 significantly improved the previous course record of 68:52.

Blanka Dörfel exceeded even her own expectations with a massive personal best improvement from 69:46 to 68:06.

“I just ran a pace at which I felt good and did not bother about split times at all. When I looked at the clock on the home straight I was completely surprised by the time. I have never felt so good in a race before,” said Blanka Dörfel, who is now expected to contest the 10,000 metres at the European Championships in Birmingham this summer.

“After that I would very much like to compete in the World Half Marathon Championships. And in the autumn I plan to run my marathon debut.” The Mainova Frankfurt Marathon on 25 October is one possible option for Dörfel.
