Day 1 Report - USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Eugene

EUGENE, Oregon (July 31, 2025) — The 2025 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships roared to life on Thursday at Hayward Field, delivering a mix of thrilling finishes, statement performances, and early-round drama. With finals in five marquee events and preliminary rounds in sprints and middle-distance races, Day 1 set the tone for what promises to be a high-stakes weekend of competition and Tokyo World Championships team qualification.

Tara Davis-Woodhall Reigns in Long Jump

Tara Davis-Woodhall dominated the women’s long jump, flying out to 7.12 meters World lead to take the crown. Claire Bryant (6.97m) and Quanesha Burks (6.90m) rounded out the podium.

Infeld Breaks Through in Women’s 10,000m

Veteran distance runner Emily Infeld, 35, finally seized her first national title in the women’s 10,000 meters, outkicking a loaded field to win in 31:43.56. She held off Elise Cranny (31:44.24) and Taylor Roe (31:45.41) in a tightly contested finish that thrilled the Hayward Field crowd.

 

In the men’s 10,000m, Nico Young emerged victorious in a dramatic sprint to the line, edging World Championship medalist Grant Fisher by just 0.25 seconds (29:02.12 to 29:02.37). Graham Blanks claimed bronze in 29:03.66.

Power on Display in Hammer and Javelin

In the women’s hammer throw, Olympic medalist DeAnna Price unleashed a best of 78.53 meters to top a world-class field. Brooke Andersen (75.14m) and Rachel Richeson (74.57m) followed.

The men’s javelin title went to Curtis Thompson, who delivered a season-best 83.89 meters. Dash Sirmon and Marc Anthony Minichello secured second and third respectively. 

Evie Bliss, representing Bucknell University, claimed the women's javelin throw national title with a winning throw of 57.77 m (189‑6) on her third attempt.

Sprint Stars Advance in 100m Heats

On the track, the 100m prelims featured high-profile names and blazing times. Kenny Bednarek clocked the fastest men’s time of the day with 9.95 seconds, while Noah Lyles cruised through in 10.05s. Trayvon Bromell (10.04s) and T’Mars McCallum (10.01s) also impressed.

In the women’s 100m, Sha’Carri Richardson eased through the opening round with a composed 11.07s, joined by Gabby Thomas, Twanisha Terry, and other top contenders in the next round.

Middle-Distance Heats Heat Up

In the 800m, Bryce Hoppel set the standard among men with a smooth 1:45.69. Colin Sahlman, Isaiah Harris, Donavan Brazier, and Brandon Miller all advanced comfortably.

The women’s 800m saw Sage Hurta-Klecker post the fastest time (1:59.28), followed by Olympic champion Athing Mu-Nikolayev, who returned to form with a 2:00.06. Ajee Wilson also moved on.

The men’s 1500m prelims brought speed early, as Cole Hocker, Yared Nuguse, and Eric Holt all dipped under 3:33 to top their heats.

Hall, Garland Lead Combined Events After Day  1

Anna Hall took command of the heptathlon with 4097, winning the 200m in 23.56s and finishing Day 1 atop the leaderboard after consistent marks across all four events.

In the decathlon, Kyle Garland leads with 4,714 points after strong performances in the 100m, long jump, shot put, and high jump. Peyton Bair ended the day with a blazing 46.25 in the 400m.

Men's Women's 3000m Steeplechase Heats

In the men's heats, Kenneth Rooks posted the fastest qualifying time at 8:21.35, leading the way into Saturday’s final. He was followed closely by Daniel Michalski with 8:21.39, and both runners secured automatic qualification courtesy of their heat performances.

 

Angelina Napoleon topped the women’s heats with a stellar 9:30.44, claiming the fastest qualifying mark of the day. Trailing her was Gabrielle Jennings with 9:30.48. Both easily secured automatic qualification for the final.

What’s Next

Day 2 promises more fireworks, with semifinals in the sprints, key middle-distance finals, and continued drama in the multis. Stars like Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Grant Holloway, and Gabby Thomas will take center stage as Team USA’s Olympic roster begins to take shape.
