Leonardo Fabbri Shines at Home as Italian Stars Impress at the 2025 Pegaso Meeting in Florence

The 2025 Pegaso Meeting at Florence’s Luigi Ridolfi Stadium delivered a showcase of elite athletics, headlined by local hero Leonardo Fabbri, who thrilled the home crowd with a commanding win in the men’s shot put. Fabbri’s 22.08m effort led a deep field and added to his strong season, marking his third throw beyond the 22-metre mark this year. The meet also featured standout performances across multiple disciplines, including victories by Jordan Scott in the men’s triple jump, Gaia Sabbatini in the women’s 800 metres, and Tsebo Matsoso in the men’s 100 metres, reinforcing the Pegaso Meeting’s reputation as one of Italy’s premier athletics events.

Men's Shot Put:

Local star Leonardo Fabbri highlighted the Pegaso Meeting at the Luigi Ridolfi Stadium in Florence with a win in the men’s shot put with 22.08m in front of his home fans. The European champion and Diamond League winner produced a solid series that features four more throws of 21.25m, 21.46m, 21.59m and 21.19. Fabbri’s training partner Zane Weir placed second with a throw of 21.29mm in the fifth round. Uziel Munoz took third place with 20.67m. 

Fabbri threw beyond the 22 metres barrier for the third time this outdoor season following his victories in Lucca with 22.31m and Lignano Sabbiadoro with 22.13m Fabbri also won in Madrid with 21.99m last Saturday. This year only Joe Kovacs threw further than Fabbri at world level with 22.48m at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. 

Men’s triple jump: 

Jamaica’s Jordan Scott won the men’s triple jump with 16.71m. Scott, who started the season with a lifetime best of 17.10m, currently leads the Diamond League standings after four wins in Xiamen with 17.27m, Oslo with 17.34m, Paris with 17.27m and Monaco with a world lead of 17.52m. 

Women’s triple jump: 

Davisleyi Velazco from Cuba bounded out to 14.38m in her second attempt to win the women’s triple jump ahead of 2023 European indoor champion Tugba Danizmas from Turkey, who leapt to 13.94m. Ilionis Guillaume from France took third place with 13.80m. 

Women’s 800 metres: 

Gaia Sabbatini from Italy won the women’s 800 metres in 2:01.04 ahead of South Africa’s Aviwe Hoboloshe (2:01.69) and Gloria Kabangu (2:02.08).Sabbatini continued her good period of form following her win in the 1500 metres in Brescia in 4:07.41 and her PB in the mile in London with 4.19.83.   

Men’s 100 metres: 

Tsebo Matsoso from South Africa won the men’s 100 metres in 10.26 (+0.7 m/s) following his second place in Lignano Sabbiadoro ten days ago. Romero Crespo from Cuba finished second in 10.28 one week after improving his PB to 10.10 in Brescia. Wayde Van Niekerk, Olympic champion in the 400 metres in Rio de Janeiro, finished third in 10.33. 

High Jump: 

Marco Fassinotti and Elena Vallortigara won the high jump by jumping 2.20m and 1.81m respectively.
