Sabastian Sawe confirmed his arrival among marathon royalty, winning the 2025 London Marathon in 2:02:25 with a commanding solo move over the final 10 miles.
The race began conservatively, with pacemakers guiding a huge men’s pack through halfway in 1:01:30. Eliud Kipchoge, Jacob Kiplimo, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, and others were content to wait, knowing a negative-split battle was ahead.
But once the pacers dropped out at 20K, the real racing began. Sawe, who burst onto the scene with a stunning Valencia Marathon win, soon showed he had another gear. He started turning the screws after 25K and finally broke things wide open at 30K, dropping a vicious 4:18 mile to split the field.
By the time he hit the Victoria Embankment, the 29-year-old Kenyan was gliding alone, casually checking his watch. He crossed the finish line in 2:02:25, winning by 70 seconds and proving he is more than a one-hit wonder.
Jacob Kiplimo, making his much-hyped marathon debut, finished second in 2:03:35 — a strong result, but Sawe was simply untouchable on the streets of London. Alexander Mutiso Munyao and Abdi Nageeye battled for the final podium spot, trailing farther back.
For Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner of all time, the race signaled a changing of the guard. He faded out of contention after 30K but finished honorably in a 6th place with clocking 2:05:25 in deep, fast field.
Sawe’s win, built on negative splits and ruthless acceleration, marks him as a true heir to the marathon throne.
