Mykolas Alekna Shatters Discus World Record with Sensational 75.56m Throw in Ramona

Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna delivered a historic performance at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational on Sunday (April 13), breaking his own discus world record with a stunning throw of 75.56m. The event, held in Ramona and part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze circuit, witnessed one of the greatest showcases of discus throwing in history.

Returning to the same venue where he set his first world record of 74.35m in 2023, the 22-year-old silver medallist from Paris Olympics wasted no time in rewriting the record books. He opened the competition with a 74.89m effort—already an improvement on his previous mark—before launching the discus 75.56m in the fourth round, becoming the first man ever to throw beyond 75 metres.

The competition featured remarkable depth. Australia’s Matt Denny, the Olympic bronze medallist, also eclipsed Alekna’s former world record. Just three days after throwing 74.25m in Ramona, Denny unleashed a massive 74.78m on Sunday and produced a consistent series that included a 73.36m throw in the final round.

The battle for podium places was equally fierce. USA’s Sam Mattis, who had finished runner-up to Denny on Thursday with a 70.08m effort, improved to 71.27m to claim third place. Germany’s Clemens Prüfer threw 71.01m for fourth, while Great Britain’s Lawrence Okoye rounded out the top five with a mark of 70.76m.

In total, five athletes surpassed the 70-metre barrier, and seven threw beyond 69 metres—underscoring the extraordinary depth and quality of the field.
