The World steeplechase champion Beatrice Chepkoech clocked 14:43 to set a new World record in the 5km at the Herculis Monaco Run on Sunday (14).
The 29-year-old Kenyan improved the previous record in a mixed-race (men and women) by five seconds. She also ran one second faster than Sifan Hassan's 14:44 world record for a women's-only 5km race.
"I'm so happy because I didn't expect it," said Chepkoech."
"It was cold and there was a lot of wind, but I tried to follow my pacemaker and everything was perfect," she added.
World 10000m champion Joshua Cheptegei led from the gun to win the race in 13:13. At the same meeting last year the 24-year-old Ugandan set the men's world 5km record with 12:51.
The wind was incredibly difficult," said Cheptegei.
