Defending champions Argentina continue their bid for back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles when they face Switzerland in the final quarterfinal on Saturday, July 11, at Kansas City Stadium. Lionel Scaloni’s side arrive after producing a remarkable late comeback to beat Egypt 3-2, while Switzerland reached their first World Cup quarterfinal in 72 years by overcoming Colombia in a penalty shootout. Lionel Messi, who has scored eight goals during the tournament, will again carry Argentina’s hopes, but Murat Yakin’s disciplined Swiss team believe they have identified spaces they can exploit as they chase the country’s first-ever World Cup semifinal appearance. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM local time in Kansas City (CDT), 9:00  PMU.S. Eastern Time (EDT), and 03:00 Central European Summer Time on Sunday, July 12.

Team news

Argentina

Argentina have no confirmed absentees. Facundo Medina has been managing a calf issue, although Scaloni otherwise has a nearly complete squad available. Cristian Romero was examined after experiencing calf discomfort against Egypt but has reportedly been cleared to play.

Scaloni could retain the midfield-heavy formation used in the previous round. Lautaro Martínez is competing with Julián Álvarez to partner Messi, with Lautaro potentially returning after contributing to Enzo Fernández’s late winner against Egypt. Nicolás Tagliafico is expected to start at left-back, while Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul, Alexis Mac Allister and Fernández could all feature in midfield.

Switzerland

Switzerland have suffered a significant blow, with Johan Manzambi ruled out because of a knee injury. Manzambi had recorded three goals and two assists at the tournament but also missed the Round-of-16 victory over Colombia.

Michel Aebischer and Luca Jaquez are also considered doubtful, leaving Yakin with decisions to make in midfield and defence. Ardon Jashari is likely to continue in Manzambi’s absence, while Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler should anchor the midfield behind Breel Embolo.

Predicted lineups

Argentina — 4-4-2:
Emiliano Martínez; Nahuel Molina, Cristian Romero, Lisandro Martínez, Nicolás Tagliafico; Rodrigo De Paul, Leandro Paredes, Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister; Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martínez.

Switzerland — 4-3-3:
Gregor Kobel; Denis Zakaria, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodríguez; Ardon Jashari, Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler; Dan Ndoye, Breel Embolo, Ruben Vargas.

Argentina have shown vulnerability during the knockout rounds, requiring extra time against Cape Verde before recovering from 2-0 down against Egypt. Switzerland, however, have not trailed at any stage of their World Cup campaign and are expected to rely on defensive organisation, aggressive pressing and quick transitions against the reigning champions.
